Church
History
The
Montezuma Methodist Church was formally organized on
February 16, 1867, with the membership of 81 coming
largely from Travelers Rest Methodist Church. Most of that
earlier congregation have moved to the newly-founded town
of Montezuma because of the arrival of the railroad lines.
By 1887 the congregation had outgrown the original church
and a new one was built at the location of the current
church.
By 1916, a
more modern building with Sunday School classrooms was
needed. The current sanctuary building was constructed and
the first service was held on March 25, 1917.
In the
early 1950’s the educational building was added to the
sanctuary. The Fellowship Hall was build in 1968 and in
1977 a Sunday School classroom was converted into a
chapel.
The pipe
organ was originally installed in 1917. The original
console was changed in 1962. The organ was restored in
1988.
In recent
years, many of the facilities have been modernized and
expanded to meet the needs of the congregation.
