Our Church Family Confirmation

Our Church FamilyMonkton United Methodist church is a small country church where the members and friends feel like family. Although our congregation does not match the numbers of members in the larger suburban churches, we have enthusiasm and a connection with each other that is precious to us. On Sunday morning we share our joys and concerns during the worship service, and we also take time before and after church to relax together and share the events of our lives. Once a month we have a fellowship hour after church with refreshments prepared by a different group of members each time. But every Sunday there is coffee ready and friends to talk with. We have an enthusiastic group of active seniors who have been a part of the church for years and who provide us with a strong link to the past. They are the foundation on which the church now rests. In addition to their valuable roles on committees and during worship, they enjoy monthly outings together. At the other end of the age spectrum we have a growing group of children who are our future. Every Sunday, our pastor calls them forward for a children's sermon and they fill the front pew and circle him on the floor as he talks. Then they leave for Sunday school which is taught by parents and older teens. They play an active part in worship presenting two plays each year and several musical pieces including hand chimes and singing as well as performing acolyte duties every Sunday. A baby-sitter is always available for very young children. The United Methodist Women is a group which is becoming more and more active. Their monthly meetings have become so popular that they have recently expanded to include meeting times during the day and in the evening to accommodate everyone's busy schedules. The UMW is active in missions, cultural activities, education, and general support of the programs of the church. They also rally many friends each November to produce some of the best candy you will ever taste! John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Church, composed many of the hymns in our hymnal. He knew the spiritual power of music and we vigorously uphold that tradition. On Sundays everyone makes a joyful noise unto the Lord as we sing hymns, and enjoy special music from the children, our choir, and frequent guest musicians. The members of our congregation have many talents which include teaching, history, raising families, farming, writing, financial work, carpentry, sales, music, insurance, small business, social work, nursing, volunteering, etc. At Monkton church each person can use his or her unique talents to strengthen the church, serve the community, and grow in spirit and love. |
