For Members Only
Hardly. Go ahead, visitors, read. Why would we want
to be exclusive when Jesus gave such an inclusive invitation to follow
him? That call of Jesus demands a commitment in response.
Not all people are equal in response, but we call our
membership to be mindful of the “cost of discipleship”.
Each member of this church, whether by Baptism and
Profession of Faith, Transfer from another United Methodist Church of
another denomination, or by reinstatement stood before our altar and
promised before God and the congregation
“to be
loyal to the United Methodist Church,
and
uphold it by your prayers,
your
presence,
your
gifts,
and your
service.”
That is a
significant commitment to make. That is the “cost of discipleship” in our
church. There are those who have not fulfilled their Covenant with God
and our people and have disregarded the vows made. However, we are
blessed with those who do, and not all of them have taken membership in
the church. There are those attendees who have never joined who have
displayed a constant commitment that must be pleasing to Christ.
We again
call all our membership into the responsibility they pledged at the altar.
