   Remember Gus

In Memory of Gustav Bischoff
November 1, 1905 - July 26, 1987

Gustav left us on July 26, 1987 after a life that spanned eighty—one years. Like everyone else he experienced his share of loves, friendships, joys, sorrows, ups and downs. For the past seven years we here at Millbrook were blessed with his presence and his friendship. We will always remember him for the wonderful music he filled our sanctuary with. How he made the organ spring to life each time his fingers caressed its keys. But there was another talent he possessed. Lesser known perhaps, but only because it had only been in his later years that he found the time to experiment with it and nurture it.

This page brings you some of the results of this nurturing. It is a selection of a few of his poems. Poetry was a logical extension of Gustav’s music and it brought him another outlet  for his thoughts and feelings, his very being.

To you who becomes the owner of this book, I wish that you too will experience the joy, sadness, wonder and mostly the love of life expressed in his words. This talent offering is my gift to the memory of this very dear friend.

MILLBROOK METHODIST CHURCH

On a knoll stands
a serene and noble white church
red door — red steps
150 years old today.
No gothic wonder
Yet in its simplicity
Breathes a majesty — a history —
a sermon — and air of
quiet benediction.
In a setting so beautiful
one can almost see the
Congregation assembling;
Can hear the organ;
the Choir singing
and the sermon of love.
God is everywhere, walks through the trees along the country side
among the tombstones
and into the Church
to the silent Chancel
where Christ in stain glass is kneeling
 in the Garden
of Gethsemane
Praying for all of us.

WORDS
You are a game to play
Black on white
A moving phenomenon
The fantasy you create
You are so humble
Yet so powerful
You spin your tales
You communicate all emotion
And life pours
From your vast treasure..

LOVE
Is a precious jewel
God gave me ;
A treasure
‘ Tucked in my heart;
A rare gift
To share with
Someone special.

A FRIEND

A friend is a treasure
to behold and keep
the joy, the fascination, the love, the warmth, the communion, one human being
shares with another.

FORMULA FOR A FRIENDSHIP

I like being with you.
I really feel good knowing
you are out there for me.
I hope that you know that you are
a very special person in my life.
It makes mc feel very warm
and comfortable when we’re together.
I love you and your friendship.
You help to make my life extra nice.

ENCHANTMENT
Give me a hug my friend
I will give you my soul
Give me your hand my friend
And we will walk through the storms. I will give you the hope
The strength
The courage
I will take you down paths
of joy and Peace
Music and Songs
And you will know
The enchantment
of Friendship.

EACH DAY
Each day is a joy
unto itself
It rises out of the dusk
With no promises
prophecies
or plans
but with hope
challenge
surprises
-- and adventure;
slowly
turning into laughter
sometimes tears
more often a casual
joyous celebration
more rewarding
than yesterday’s thoughts
for the morrow.

A PORTRAIT OF FRIENDSHIP
When
My mind meets your mind
My soul becomes your soul
My thoughts your thoughts
My joy your joy
My grief your grief
My pain your pain
My empathy your empathy
My love your love
That’s friendship
So tender
So kind
So frail.

DAWN
As the dawn comes up
God gives you the gift of gifts.
A day is born
Fragile yet indestructable
Inspiring
All wrapped up in gay profusion
The setting for you
to live
Love
Perform
Enjoy
and Contribute.

LIFE

I’m talking to a young man
20 years old
Could I but be 20 again,
That was almost 60 years ago,
I would correct all the mistakes
I could repair all the quilt.
I never really loved anyone
Until I was 70,
That’s the American man.
When you are young, that’s passion, But through the years
you find that no definition
indefinable
fascinating gem
Love.
Since the ship of life
makes one trip — One voyage
and only goes one way
It docks here and there
to let you explore
the mysteries of life.
The sandbox - schooldays
Romance — the children
The grandchildren
The wonders of the earth
The blue, blue sky
The golden rays of the sun.
Morning — high noon and evening,
The starlit night.
Why can’t I live my life over again?
I’d like to! But this ship goes one way,
docks and never makes
a return voyage.

AN OLD MAN’S SAGA

I live every day
Like it were a diamond
And with such urgency
Like tomorrow might
Never come
If you wish to enjoy
My talents
My companionship
My friendship
My love
Enjoy them today
Do not wait until tomorrow
Today may be the end.

LIFE
Life is the tallest mountain to climb With a volcano
the travail and the tribulations inside. The older you are
the higher you climb,
the rougher it gets.
That’s when you need a friend
to clasp your hand,
to take the steps with you,
one by one,
to give you a boost
here and there,
a pat on your shoulder.
Finally you reach the top,
that lonely part of life
to share the beauty,
the past, the present,
the joy, the sorrow,
the laughter, the tears,
the love, the dreams,
the secrets, the memories,
these abide:
but to have that friend.

SHADES OF NIGHT

The soft, spreading,
shades of night,
lulls to sleep
a restless world
that dreams
on and on.

LOVE NEVER DIES
Your spouse is gone
Your friend is gone
This friend, that friend
Family too
and soon you will be gone
But love goes on
From me to you
and you
and you
and never dies.

A SOUVENIR
You took me into your hearts a while ago.
But when the sun sets,
The days turn to night,
The stars pale,
The dreams vanish,
And I am here no more
I shall be there in your hearts
Forever and ever.
