Personal / Professional Information
Linda Lutz, choir director, was born and raised in Highland Park, MI and graduated
from Highland Park High School in 1966.
Linda began piano lessons at age 5 and studied with Karl Haas for 10 years. An oboe
English Horn major, she attended Wayne State University
for one year and graduated from the University of Michigan
with a Bachelor of Music Education in 1970. She studied with Detroit Symphony
members Ron Odmark, Arno Mariotti, and UM professor Florian Mueller. Linda was principal English Horn in the UM Symphony
Band under William Revelli.
After graduation, Linda taught instrumental and choral music in the Britton-Macon Area school system for three years. Moving
to Milford in 1974, Linda took time out to raise her two children before returning to teaching in the
Huron Valley School district in 1976. Linda
taught beginning band to students in most of the district's elementary schools before accepting a permanent
position at Highland Middle School in 1982.
While at Highland, teaching over 265 students a year, Linda enjoyed success with first division ratings
at district band festivals for 17 years. A highlight at Highland came in 1995 when the Concert Band
was invited to perform at the Mid-West Music Conference in Ann Arbor, the only middle school band in
Michigan to perform that year. Linda retired in 2000.
Linda has enjoyed singing in many church choirs and acting as rehearsal/performance pianist for the
Huron Valley Community Theater as well as many years as accompanist for students attending Solo and Ensemble
Festivals. Linda plays in the "Joyful Noise" Bell Choir at MUMC as well as the Adele Thomas Handbell Choir in
Waterford.
Directing the Chancel Choir at MUMC for the past 18 months has been one of the most satisfying
musical experiences in her career. The choir numbers have grown (but new members are always welcome!), and a
variety of new anthems have been performed. Linda has been blessed with deep bonds of friendships with the choir members and
with the weekly fellowship they all enjoy.
