A History of Serving Mobile's Inner City

The Mission has played an active role in providing needed services in the Mobile Inner City since its inception in 1965. During this forty three year period the Mission has implemented programs for all ages to improve the quality of life for residents in this predominantly low income community. Some of these programs have grown and taken on lives of their own and are now serving the entire Mobile Area. A few examples of these are the Disaster Response Program after Hurricane Frederick in 1979. The Mobile Council of Downtown Churches grew out of this program and in the past few years has become the Mobile Area Inner Faith Council made up of groups of all faiths who address issues of those living in poverty in the greater Mobile Area. The Mobile Metro Jail Ministry was formed by this group.

The Mission was also one of the original organizations that worked to form what is now the Bay Area Food Bank.

We were instrumental in the formation of the Homeless Coalition of Mobile which is now Housing First. The Mission made the annex at St. Francis St. UMC, which was then part of the Mission, available to house the Homeless Coalition and Loaves Fishes which operates a day center for the homeless. This was after other locations had been blocked because of zoning problems or opposition within the community.

For twenty years the Mission provided office space for Mobile Community Action Committee (MCAC) prior to its moving to a larger Center with other MCAC offices.

The Mission was also one of the original participants in the Emergency Food and Shelter Funds program through United Way and continues to participate today to provide emergency services to the residents of the Oakdale Maysville Communities.

From these roots, the Mission has grown to include a range of programs for youth, seniors, homeless single women and community enrichment.
