Gleaning Fellowships

A major goal of the Hunger Relief Advocate Initiative is to bring the entire church, under UMMen leadership, into hands-on hunger ministry with the poor of America. For this reason, the gleaning component of the Initiative is vital.

United Methodist Men groups are encouraged to organize gleaning events that engage the entire church in hands-on hunger relief. The Society of St. Andrew recognizes UMMen fellowships that do so as Gleaning Fellowships. Gleaning Fellowships are those United Methodist Men groups that spend at least 100 man-hours in gleaning activities in a calendar year.

For UMMen fellowships in conferences that have a Conference HRA, the Hunger Relief Advocate will work with the fellowship to schedule gleaning opportunities. In conferences without a Conference HRA, the Society of St. Andrew will provide a free Gleaning Guide that gives step-by-step instructions on how to set up a gleaning event. You can order one by calling the Society of St. Andrew at 434-299-5956 or toll-free at 800-333-4597.

For the purposes of Meals for Millions, gleaning activities include traditional gleaning as well as planting, cultivating and harvesting food for the hungry, potato distributions, and related activities. When planning and holding gleaning events, invite all church members to participate. However, only the time contributed by United Methodist Men members should be credited toward the Gleaning Fellowship man-hours goal.

Every Gleaning Fellowship receives a certificate recognizing their hands-on involvement in feeding the hungry in their community.
