S – Scripture: As you read through your scripture reading for each day, write down a passage that stands out for you. It can be just one verse or even just a sentence included in a larger verse. Write it down word for word and it will become the focal point of your journal for that day.
O – Observation: What strikes you about this passage? Why does it stand out to you? What is God saying to you this day as you read over this passage?
A – Application: Now is where it get’s personal! How are you going to apply this passage and this observation to your own life? Does it speak directly to your own circumstances? How are you going to be different today because you have taken this time with God?
P – Prayer: This is a written prayer. Write out your prayer to God in response to what you have learned or experienced. |

S.O.A.P. A Simple Disciplined Approach to Journaling |
|
Soap is your daily guide to journaling. Each day that you take time with God, you will write in your journal following the soap outline. Each aspect of this method is explained below: |
|
The soap outline appears to have originated with the Dr. Wayne Cordeiro, senior pastor of New Hope Fellowship in Oahu, Hawaii. It has since been adapted and modified in many ways and can be found in different forms around the internet. Bishop Dick Wills, a friend of Dr. Cordeiro’s has chosen to include a “Y” making the acronym soapy. The Y stands for “Yield”, asking how are you going to yield to this learning in your life today?
A sample journal entry for SOAP is found on the following page. It is significantly abbreviated but you can make your entries as long as you wish. |
