SOCIAL SERVICE

We are graphically reminded of our great responsibility in the Lord's parable and vision on the Day of Judgement, where great emphasis is placed on our social witness during our lifetime. 'Whenever you did this for one of the least important of these brothers of mine, you did it for me'. Matthew 25:40

The Department of Social Responsibility has the task of an effective presentation of the Christian Social Witness in the context of the total ministry of our Church, to share the message of God's love in Jesus Christ.

In the context of the deepening poverty situation, the yawning gap between the haves and have-nots, inequality in the distribution of wealth, income and opportunities, rising levels of unemployment and cost of living create frustration and bitterness towards society. Furthermore, these social problems in the midst of a prolonged ethnic strife could surely stir the Methodist conscience to a greater social action and responsibility.

The usual allocation of Rs 50,000/- was released to the 3 Districts for the year 2000/2001.

As a general overview in the exercise of Social Care in our church it would be agreed that there has been over the years much involvement in the running of Children's Homes, Homes for Elders and Disabled, a large number of Day Care Centres, Nutrition Feeding Centres and a few Vocational Training Centres. However, in the deepening social crisis of poverty, youth unemployment, displacement of refugees due to the ongoing war, social problems and discord and deterioration of national and religious values, the Church is constantly reminded of the social gospel implicit in Methodism emphasized by John Wesley and witnessed in the impact of Methodism in the social turmoil of his time in Britain.

The Methodist Church is deeply indebted to overseas donors and the World Council of Churches for continued assistance in relief and rehabilitation work.
