A SHORT HISTORY OF
METAMORA UNITED METHODIST CHURH

Small Cross & Flame       In the summer of 1853, nine persons met in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Reuban Tredway, one-half mile east of Metamora and started a class meeting on Sunday Mornings. Bad weather often interfered with attendance but by 1867, a first Methodist Church building was started and completed in 1869. The Ohio Conference, through the Toledo district, in September of 1870, started a circuit with Amboy as headquarters. Santee joined in 1869 and Sylvania joined the circuit in 1870. The circuit was enlarged each year. Red School House joined in 1877 and Swanton joining in 1878.

As each point in the circuit joined, each built a Church and later became separate entities. The first Sunday School in Amboy, on April 4, 1880, showed eleven officers present. There were 28 males, 11 females, eleven male infants and 10 female infants present. The lesson was from Matthew 8:18-24, the Golden rule, "What manner of man is this that the winds and the seas obey him." Mr. and Mrs. Clair Granger were new scholars.

1880 brought the signing of the pledge for total Abstinence except for fresh cider. In the year 1894, the original church burned and immediate effort was made to rebuild in 1895. A youth organization called Epworth League was organized in 1926 with 36 members. The Home Missionary Society, Foreign Missions, and the Ladies Aid joined in one organization in 1939. It was called Women's Society of Christian Service. A new sanctuary was built in 1960 for our present center of worship.
