OUR PASTOR is the Rev. Gregory L. Blair, an ordained elder in the West Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. He has served as a pastor since 1987 in various churches within West Virginia. Greg was appointed to our church in June of 2002.Our pastor is a graduate of Point Pleasant high school, West Virginia Wesleyan College where he majored in music education and Asbury Theological Seminary where he received a Master of Divinity. His pastoral skills include preaching, teaching, visitation, music, and children’s ministry. He believes God has called him to serve in small, rural congregations. His focus of ministry is three – fold: 1. To become familiar with the church and community where he lives. 2. To provide pastoral leadership within the charge. 3. Above everything else, to lead others to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
CHURCH HISTORY
Memorial United Methodist Church began as a vision in the early 1920’s here in the community of West Williamson. It was not until 1946 that a small group of people met to organize the church. Services were first held in the West Williamson Grade School. After years of hard work and planning, the congregation’s dreams became a reality as they moved into their own building in September of 1948. The lot on which the church is situated on was a gift from H.T. Williamson. The Rev. Jack Sampson was their first pastor. In his words, the church should have been called "The Church That Faith Built"; faith in God, faith in a plan, faith in purpose, and faith in the people.Over fifty years have now passed since Rev. Sampson first opened the doors of this church to a new congregation. Ministers and members of our fellowship have come and gone. Our facilities have changed and grown. Beautiful music now fills the community from our church carillon, a gift from the family of Kathleen David. Yet for all of the changes that have happened over these many years, one thing remains the same: our faith in Jesus Christ! May the vision of Rev. Samson’s dream for our church continue to unfold as we open our doors to a new generation of people needing to hear the message of the Gospel of our Lord!
