Journal
- Day 3 6/17/09
"Greetings from Nica! We did arrive safe and sound last night. Hot, sweltering, humid conditions... but it rained and that helped (a little).
Today we spent the day out at the project. We arrived around 10:00 am and all of the families welcomed us and greeted us. We presented them with all of the books that we brought down for the completed library. Such is Nica life, unpredictable... so we are now building a kitchen (next to the library) for the school parents to use in cooking lunch for the kids.
We had a rain shortened day working, finishing up around 3:00 pm. The families found it fun to watch as the girls danced and played in the rain (like true Oregonians).
" Jim

--"The kids were absolutely amazing
workers and never let up for two hours in the sweltering hot sun
organizing a "brick brigade" moving the huge stack of
bricks you saw in the photo from one area about a hundred yards to
the site of the kitchen foundation.
--The group worked alongside adults
from the housing project including some of the school teachers from
the school they are building the kitchen for.
--The kids that knew Spanish got a good
workout interpreting for all. Those that didn't learned new
ways to communicate to get jobs done and make new friends.
They all felt very welcomed and were touched at their reception and
their need to be there.
--Ron volunteered to help with setting
re-bar. He was told this was the women's work. When he
saw the women begin work, he went over and offered his help to show
them a new way to twist the wires quickly with some hand tools he
had brought. He said they all laughed and said, "we want
to keep this man helping us!". They quickly got the job
done before the cement arrived and Ron left his tools with the
ladies.
--The group was invited to walk to the
homes that were being built. Evidently this is quite a long
treck. They passed a mango tree and were delighted to have a
snack of fresh mango!
-- They also visited a small sanctuary
and had the opportunity with Dorita to reflect on their day and to
get up in front of the group and share individual and group
experiences. Ron tells me this was a very powerful time for
everyone!
--In the afternoon, they went on a bus
ride to Managua and took a quick tour of the city seeing stores and
getting a general idea of life there.
--At dinnertime, they had the same food
made for them each day...Rice with chicken on top, coleslaw, mango,
pineapple, watermelon, papaya, and fried plantains. Ron said
the kids love it and eat it all with no complaints about
anything!
--Today the group is planning a trip to
the city center of Managua to a famous plaza where the Pope has
spoken on previous occasions. There is also a Methodist church
they will visit there.
I hear Ron so excited to see these kids
in action and he is so inspired about what is taking place in their
lives. God bless everyone that worked so hard to make this
trip possible"...D.A.
