JOI COLLIER
Joi is a 43-year old mother of
three. Her children are Candyce, Gregory and Raquel. Joi works
for the New York State Retirement System, and is also a
Specialist 4 in the United States National Guard.
Joi and the three children moved to
the Capital District from New York City nine years ago. As Joi
puts it: “When we moved here, we had nothing. Through hard work
and God’s grace we have made a life for ourselves.”
Joi’s three children are all very
successful students. Candyce attends Schenectady County
Community College, and is preparing for a career as a Police
Officer. Gregory is also a student at SCCC, and has set
Architecture as his career goal. The youngest, Raquel, is a
student at Schenectady High School, and has very strong artistic
bent. Both Gregory and Raquel are basketball players
—
with Gregory playing for SCCC and
Raquel playing on the Schenectady H. S. team.
When I asked Joi about her hobbies,
she said that most of her time is spent with her children and
with her church, Parson’s Memorial Temple in Schenectady. She
did confide that she loves to play Pool, and is in a Pool League
in Schenectady.
When Joi applied to the Habitat
program, she wrote the following: “I get an exciting feeling to
know that I can see my house grow from beginning to end, and all
at an affordable price. I have always wanted some place that my
children and I can call our own, especially a place that we can
contribute to.”
When I spoke with Joi about this
little “biography,” she asked me to convey to all of the
Methodists that she is enormously grateful for their support,
and that she and, her children will work as hard as they can to
be positive and contributing members of the neighborhood and the
community. She said, “I want the Methodists to feel that their
investment has been worthwhile, and is a blessing in God’s
eyes.”
