McKendree Methodist Men’s Country School Project
(A History)

Monday evening, January 3, 2000, Max Ervin and Harry Mims, of Myer’s Memorial UMC Gastonia, were featured speakers for our Methodist Men meeting. They told us of the good work being done by the “Little Red School House” in Gaston County which was started by a Sunday School class at their church in 1981. Before leaving our church that evening, they gave us three pennies which they had found earlier that evening. This became the first donation to a project which we later organized. At our meeting on February 7, 2000, we voted to start a similar project for needy students in the Lincoln County Schools beginning at first for only Union School.  On February 8, 2000 our U M President Bill Keever presented our plans to School Nurse Teena Leonard and the Principal of Union School. Before he could get home that morning, Ms. Leonard had already called to say that she had a student that needed some help. Later, this small beginning was expanded to include Northbrook, Love Memorial, and S. Ray Lowder schools.  During that first partial school year 1999-2000, six students were helped with a total of $642.93.  Working with School Nurses, Social Workers and others, we now provide this service to all schools in Lincoln County.

School Year /Number Students/ Total funds

1999-2000      6      642.93            2000-2001   10   $642.72            2001-2002   9   1123.16
2002-2003    22   1555.00             2003-2004   21   1495.00            2004-2005  28  2571.00
2005-2006    24   1624.66             2006-2007   28     933.91            2007-2008  56  2631.68
2008-2009    46   1746.05

As of the end of the 2008 - 2009 School year, a total of 250 students have been helped, with a total amount of $14,966.11.   ALL donations are appreciated.

Country School Project currently helps needy students in all schools in Lincoln County through the School Nurses and Counselors. Anytime a nurse or counselor discovers a child in need of medical care, eyeglasses, or dental work, she will call a member of our committee. Immediate authorization will be given. NO request has ever been denied.

Our goal is to help students who have no one else to turn to times of need.
