The Kidz Gym Youth Group of McConnell UMC welcomes all children ages 5 to young adult to come join us having fun while serving the Lord. The purpose for the Youth Group at McConnell United Methodist Church is to promote a fun, safe environment for spiritual growth, fellowship, and service for youth in and around our community.
We meet every 2nd and 4th Thursday night of each month from 6 to 8 pm at the church with many fun activities planned for everyone involved. During a typical Youth Group meeting, we play games in the gym, make crafts, play board games, rejoice in devotions and music and enjoy a snack before going home.
Some of the missions and events our youth participate in are:
Annual Fall Food Drive. In the fall of each year our youth collect food
and toiletry items for the Le-Win Food Pantry to help them stock their shelves
to serve local needy people. In 2006, our youth collected over 609 items
by going door to door asking for community citizens to donate, and most did this
year!
St. Jude Relay For Life Bike-a-Thon. In October, we had several youth
participate in a church sponsored bike-a-thon to raise funds for the St. Jude's
Children's Research Hospital. We had a great turnout and made over $700
for childhood cancer research at the 2006 event.
Annual Chili Lunch at the end of February to make proceeds to better our program
and monies used to help fund our projects and activities each year. The
youth help make the soup, set up the tables and serve our guests. This
event is a joint-ministry with our Sunday School classes.
Charter Bus Trips! We hold a bus trip every-other-year to a day-away
destination to visit and enjoy. Some of the places we have visited in the
past were Six Flags Great America, Magic Waters Waterpark, Brookfield Zoo,
Museum of Science and Industry, Shedd Aquarium/Field Museum/Adler Planetarium,
Volcano Falls Adventure Park in Loves Park, and Circus World Museum.
Local visits to parks, bowling alleys, and roller skating rink.
We hold a Halloween Party each year for the youth in the community. In
2006, we went on a fun hayrack ride through the countryside with some spooky
characters jumping out at us along the way!!! Back at the church we
enjoyed roasted wieners and s'mores at the bonfire.
Rockin' Lock-In held in the church for the Jr./Sr. High Youth for an entire
night once a year. In March 2007 we held our lock in. We watch movies, play games and just enjoy being with each other
having a ton of fun. Can you survive the night?!?!
Community outreach through Christmas caroling every holiday season to shut-ins
and senior citizens in and around McConnell and Winslow.
We Make and deliver crafts to our town's shut-ins to look at and enjoy.
