McAlester District Youth Serve on Mission Trip

LeFlore County, OK - 9 young people from Heavener & Poteau First United Methodist Churches spent the week of June 22-27 at Youth Force Oklahoma City, a mission event in the inner city of Oklahoma City.

Joining over 200 other youth and adults, the teams worked to repair and repaint homes of elderly and families in need.

Youth participating were Katrina Broussard, Drew Cottrill, Leah Cottrill, Tasha Janway, Wendy Myers, and Dylan Roop from Heavener; and Keely Redhage, Kawika Santos, and Rachel Ware from Poteau. "Youth Force is an opportunity to be an active part of the body of Christ. The youth and I agree that this has definitely become a yearly tradition for our group that we would like to see brought closer to home," said Heavener leader Stephanie Shadwick. Also serving as leaders were Kim Hardaway from Poteau and Rev. Don Whitman from Wister.

Each youth spent the week working in a God Squad, a group of eight to ten youth and two adult leaders. They worked on their job sites from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and, after showers and rest time, spent the evening doing recreational activities and attending worship services. Participants were housed at dormitories at Oklahoma City University in Oklahoma City, OK.

"It still amazes me how Youth Force can put together 10 complete strangers who after only five days become like family that would do anything to help one another," said 13-year-old Tasha.

"Youth Force showed me how no matter how old or young you are, when put in a group together anything could be accomplished," said 18-year-old Katrina (Katrina Broussard, Heavener First UMC, shown here with paint can and brush, atop a ladder).

This year marks the 19th year Youth Force has been in mission to Oklahoma communities. Since its creation, hundreds of homes have been repaired and restored. Youth Force is sponsored by the Oklahoma Conference of the United Methodist Church and Volunteers in Mission.
