"Resurrection Power"

Delivered 4/12/09

Prayer:

Intro:

A young boy stood outside an art store looking intently at a painting of Jesus on the cross. A man approached and asked, "Do you know who that is?"

The boy answered, "Yes, sir, that is Jesus the Savior who died on the cross to save me. Those people around Him are the soldiers who killed Him. And that woman who is crying was His mother."

The man patted the boy on the head and walked away. He had not gone far when he felt a tug on his sleeve. The same little fellow he had spoken to moments before said, "Please, sir, I forgot to tell you something else. Jesus is not on that cross anymore. He is alive because He rose again. He is in heaven today."

He rose because He’s the Son of God

He rose because of Resurrection Power.

Power: ability to do work over period of time.

Jesus’ death & resurrection has accomplished a great deal over a long period of time.

Power of Love

John 3:16 – “God so loved world, He gave Only Son so whoever believes will not perish, but have eternal life”

Power of Forgiveness

          70 x 7 times…

Luke 23:34 – “Father forgive them, they do not know what they are doing.”

Power of Sacrifice

Isaiah 53:5 - But he was pierced for our transgressions,

He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.

Power of Life over Death

Pastor George Thomas, -smalltown New England   Easter Morning: to the Church w/ a rusty, bent, old bird cage, and set it by the pulpit.

Eyebrows were raised and, as if in response, Pastor Thomas began to  speak...

"I saw a young boy in town w/ this bird cage.
3 little wild birds.  "What you got there, son?"
"Just some old birds,"
"What are you gonna do with them?"

"Take 'em home and have fun with 'em," he answered. "I'm gonna tease 'em and pull out their feathers to make 'em fight. I'm gonna have a real good time."
"But you'll get tired of those birds sooner or later. What will you do?"
"Oh, I got some cats,"

Pastor silent for a moment. "How much do you want for those birds, son?"
"Huh?? !!! Why, you don't want them birds, mister. They're just plain old field birds. They don't sing. They ain't even pretty!"
"How much?"

Boy sized up the pastor & said, "$10?"
Pastor reached in his pocket & took out a ten.

In a flash, the boy was gone.

The pastor carried it to the end of the street & set them free.

Well, that explained the empty bird cage on the pulpit, and then the pastor began to tell this story.

One day Satan and Jesus having a conversation. Satan had just come from the Garden of Eden, and he was gloating and boasting.
"Yes, sir, I just caught the world full of people down there. Set me a  trap, used bait I knew they couldn't resist. Got 'em all!"
"What are you going to do with them?" Jesus asked.

"Oh, I'm gonna have fun! I'm gonna teach them how to marry and divorce each other, how to hate and abuse each other, how to drink and smoke and curse. I'm gonna teach them how to invent guns and bombs and kill each other. I'm really gonna have fun!"
"And what will you do when you’re done with them?"

"Oh, I'll kill 'em,"

"How much do you want for them?" Jesus asked.
"Oh, you don't want those people. They ain't no good. Why, you'll take them and they'll just hate you. They'll spit on you, curse you and kill you.

You don't want those people!!"

How much? He asked again.

Satan looked at Jesus and sneered, "All your blood, tears and your life."

Jesus said, "DONE!" Then He paid the price.

That’s why Jesus has power over sin and death!

Jesus is Risen!  He’s paid the price, won the victory.

Because of His love, we have Resurrection Power!

The Lord's
Prayer #6

"Thine is Kingdom, Power, & Glory Forever"

Delivered 4/5/09

Prayer:

Intro:

Final installment of Series – Palm Sunday – Time to Connect the Dots

Jesus makes the way for all our praises & requests in His death & resurrection

Jesus fulfills the prophecy about Himself in His death & resurrection

His entrance also gives clues to why the crowd would be so fickle…

Let’s take a deeper look & see

Kingdom:

What did crowd do when He entered?

Gathered, parade, palms, cloaks – shouts of “Hosanna!”

Repeated the way Solomon was anointed King:                                                                                  1Kings 1:38-48

They were expecting the next King of Israel – the next “Son of David”

Hosanna: “Save us Now”                                                                                                                                                                  Psalm 118:25

What did Jesus say about The Kingdom of God?

Like Good Samaritan, Lost Sheep, Prodigal, Seeds Sown

When arrested & in front of Pilate: “My Kingdom is not of this world…”          John 18:36

Does this sound like the crowd & Jesus on the same page?

Power:

The crowd wanted Jesus to use His power to overthrow the Romans…

Jesus would demonstrate His power of sin & death through his resurrection

Does this sound like the crowd & Jesus on the same page?

Glory:

The crowd was giving Jesus glory in expectation that He would use His power

When? NOW – “Hosanna!” was a war cry. “Save us Now!”

“Here He comes, the Healer, Miracle Worker, Feeder of 5000,

Life Giver (Lazarus & Jairus daughter,) Calmer of the Seas.

Now is the time for Him to call down the Angels & bring on the revolution!

Jesus only received 15 minutes of fame.

Was this the kind of glory Jesus deserved? (crowd, parade, palms, cloaks, shouts)

Oh the shouts – in a couple days they changed from “Hosanna!” to “Crucify!”

Does this sound like the crowd & Jesus on the same page?

Prayer #5

"Lead Us Not Into Temptation, But Deliver Us From Evil"

Delivered 3/29/09

Prayer:

Intro:

30 seconds… time to recite Lord’s Prayer
Length of red light, TV commercial,
time to walk from Living Room to Fridge & get snack,
1 good long day dream…
Not much time, all we need to connect up w/ God
Sufficient to offer praise, allegiance, & make requests

5th in series: Lead us not into Temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Recap: Our Father – Abba
In Heaven: far above us, above our ways & thoughts
Hallowed be: Holy, heavenly, honored
Kingdom come: God’s final Kingdom triumph over evil
Thy Will: God’s plan, not ours.  Submit our wills
Daily Bread: God provides, enough, daily dependence
Forgive: conditional as we forgive others…
Today: Temptation or Trial

Jose Rivera:

Bandit from Mexico –plundered small towns in Texas – ran south of border to escape.
Town finally hired ranger to arrest & retrieve loot
Ranger tracked & tracked – finally found him in desolate ramshackle cantina
Announced to young man at bar, I’m here to arrest Jose Rivera. (dead or alive)
Have you seen him?  Right there…
You Jose Rivera?  No speak English…
Translation tedious
Finally ranger gave 2 choices: tell where $ is or die
Jose: “Out of bar R, 1 mile will see well.
Past well is huge tree, by trunk is large concrete slab
Will need help removing it
Inside is all jewelry & most of $.
”Young man: turned to ranger, opened mouth, swallowed… paused… & said
“Jose said… Jose said… ‘Go ahead & shoot!’”

Temptation – face it every day
How do we stand firm?

NRSV & KJV: temptation, NIV: testing

1a. Experiment, attempt, trial, proving
1b. Trial of one’s fidelity, integrity, virtue

        Enticement to sin…

Max talks about His athletic career.
Full of mistakes. Bad long-snap, bobbled last out, clipping on 80 punt return – called back…
“It’s bad to lose, its worse still, to help your opponent win!”
Max equates succumbing to temptation with helping the other team…
“He will not let you be tested beyond your strength.”

Lead us not into temptation

“This prayer is for those who already have:
Asked their Father for provision (give us this day)
And pardon for yesterday (forgive us our sins)
Now we ask for protection for tomorrow…

Father & son walking down icy street.
Father: be careful, boy too excited to slow down
Hits ice… up go the feet, down plops the bottom
Dad comes & helps boy to feet
Boy apologizes for disregarding warning,
Then, tightly holding his father’s big hand, he asks,
“Keep me from the slippery spots.  Don’t let me fall again.”
Walk too treacherous to make alone.
We place our small hand in His large one & say,
“Please Abba, keep me from evil.”

Prayer Path

In one region of Africa, the first Xn converts were very diligent about praying
Believers each had special place to pray.
Villagers reached “prayer rooms” by their own paths when grass began to grow, it was evident person was not praying very much.
Christians were concerned for each other, so
Custom sprang up.
When anyone noticed an overgrown “Prayer path,” he or she would go to the person and lovingly warn, “Friend, there’s grass on your path!”

"Forgive Us Our Sins, as We Forgive Others"

Delivered 3/22/09

Prayer:

Intro:

Everyone in town knew they were feuding…

Many people talked about it…

I never found out what started it…

These 2 farmers back home who lived on either side of our house.

Both were always good to us.  We’d bought part of our property from the farmer on the left.  The teenagers who lived on the right took my sister & I horseback riding from time to time.  We loved crossing the road & feeding the horses carrots & apples.

Something happened & they feuded & feuded.

I still don’t know why…

Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.

14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; 15 but if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. (Matt 6:14-15)

Do I need to say more?

Lack of forgiveness affects relationships – causes distance

It takes energy to keep a grudge – You know people who hold grudges…

What do they look like, what do they act like?

Do they think about anything else?

Forgive – to let go   A common expression – “Let it go…”

The hospital was unusually quiet that bleak January evening, quiet and still like the air before a storm. I stood in the nurses’ station on the 7th floor and glanced at the clock. It was 9 p.m. I threw a stethoscope around my neck and headed for room 712, last room on the hall. Room 712 had a new patient. Mr. Williams. A man all alone. A man strangely silent about his family.

As I entered the room, Mr. Williams looked up eagerly, but dropped his eyes when he saw it was only me, his nurse. There seemed little indication he had suffered a slight heart attack a few hours earlier.

“Nurse, would you—” He hesitated, tears filling his eyes. “Would you call my daughter? Tell her I’ve had a heart attack. A slight one. You see, I live alone and she is the only family I have.

Of course I’ll call her.” I said, studying his face. “Will you call her right away—as soon as you can?” He was breathing fast—too fast. “I’ll call her the very first thing,” I said, patting his shoulder. “Nurse,” he called, “could you get me a pencil and paper?” I dug a scrap of yellow paper and a pen from my pocket and set it on the bedside table.

I walked back to the nurses’ station.   Mr. Williams daughter was listed on his chart as the next of kin. I got her number from information and dialed. Her soft voice answered.  “Janie, this is Sue Kidd, a registered nurse at the hospital. I’m calling about your father. He was admitted tonight with a slight heart attack and—”

“No!” she screamed into the phone, startling me. “He’s not dying is he?”

“His condition is stable at the moment,” I said, trying hard to sound convincing. Silence. I bit my lip.

“You must not let him die!” she said.  “But you don’t understand,” she pleaded. “My daddy and I haven’t spoken in almost a year. We had a terrible argument on my 21st birthday, over my boyfriend. I ran out of the house. I—I haven’t been back. All these months I’ve wanted to go to him for forgiveness. The last thing I said to him was, ‘I hate you.’

“Please, God, let this daughter find forgiveness.”
“I’m coming
. Now! I’ll be there in 30 minutes,” she said. Click. She had hung up.

I hurried down the hall nearly in a run. I opened the door. Mr. Williams lay unmoving. I reached for his pulse. there was none. “Code 99. Room 712. Code 99. Stat.” The alert was shooting through the hospital within seconds after I called the switchboard through the intercom by the bed.

O God,” I prayed. “His daughter is coming. Don’t let it end this way.” The door burst open. Doctors and nurses poured into the room pushing emergency equipment. Nurses plunged syringes of medicine into the intravenous tubing. I connected the heart monitor.  Nothing. Not a beat. My own heart pounded. “God, don’t let it end like this. Not in bitterness and hatred. His daughter is coming. Let her find peace.”

“Stand back,” cried a doctor. I handed him the paddles for the electrical shock to the heart. He placed them on Mr. William’s chest. Over and over we tried. But nothing. No response. Mr. Williams was dead. How could this happen? How? I stood by his bed, stunned. How could I face his daughter'

When I left the room, I saw her against the wall by a water fountain. A doctor who had been inside 712 only moments before, stood at her side, talking to her, gripping her elbow. Then he moved on, leaving her slumped against the wall. Such pathetic hurt reflected from her face. Such wounded eyes. She knew. The doctor had told her that her father was gone. “Janie, I’m so sorry,” I said. It was pitifully inadequate.

I never hated him, you know. I loved him,” she said.

God, please help her, I thought. Suddenly she whirled toward me. “I want to see him.”

My first thought was, Why put yourself through more pain? We walked slowly down the corridor to 712. She pushed open the door. We moved to the bed, huddled together, taking small steps in unison. Janie leaned over the bed and buried her face in the sheets. I tried not to look at her, at this sad, sad good-bye. I backed against the bedside table. My hand fell upon a scrap of yellow paper. I picked it up. It read:

My dearest Janie, I forgive you. I pray you will also forgive me. I know that you love me. I love you too. Daddy

The note was shaking in my hands as I thrust it toward Janie. She read it once. Then twice. Her tormented face grew radiant. Peace began to glisten in her eyes. She hugged the scrap of paper to her breast.

“Thank You, God,” I whispered, looking up at the window. Life seemed as fragile as a snowflake on the window. But thank You, God, that relationships, sometimes fragile as snowflakes, can be mended together again—but there is not a moment to spare.                                                   -Guideposts Magazine, 1979

The Lord's
Prayer #3

"Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread"

Delivered 3/15/09

Prayer:

Intro:

3 of 5 in series Lord’s Prayer

1: Father who is in Heaven, Holy is Your Name
2: Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done

Today: Give us this day, our Daily Bread

Missionary statesman Hudson Taylor had complete trust in God’s faithfulness. In his journal he wrote:

Our heavenly Father is a very experienced One. He knows very well that His children wake up with a good appetite every morning… He sustained 3 million Israelites in the wilderness for 40 years. We do not expect He will send 3 million missionaries to China; but if He did, He would have ample means to sustain them all… Depend on it,

God’s work done in God’s way will never lack God’s supply.

Bread is most common food in world.  Every society has some form of bread

Places w/o meat, only bread.  (Ukraine)       Prison: bread & water

Bread: in 70’s bread meant $ (all we need, or the most important thing we need)

Jesus: Bread of Life    (He’s all we need or most important thing we need)

(God has provided for our need) –salvation

“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35)

?: If Jesus is all we need, why do we keep looking for something else, or something more?

Scripture Setting: after feeding of 5,000.  People saw connection to OT, Wilderness
People in Jesus’ day were very aware of Exodus.
30 So they said to him, “What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing? 31Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness;

People in Jesus’ time: Show us a sign, then we’ll believe.
People in Moses’ time: complained, NIV: murmured         manna = “What is it?”

“I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day. In that way I will test them, whether they will follow my instruction or not.”

Did Israelites pass God’s test?  What happened?  What happened on Sabbath?
Why didn’t manna get wormy like it did on the other days of the week?
I believe 2 things were motivating cheaters:         Fear & greed – we’ve evolved, right?

Why did Israelites have to gather every day?  Why not once a week?
v30: God was testing them…
Daily Bread = daily dependence on God.
Daily reminder God is providing, is in control
Jesus’ Prayer: Give us this day our Daily Bread
How long does this request last?  What do we need to do the next day?
Same pattern for us: Daily dependence on God
Not just looking for God to supply our every need, but looking to God daily to supply our needs.
Daily needs: food, shelter, clothing, love, friendship, work, rest, salvation.
Wants are different from our needs.
I believe God loves to grant our wants, but not if they conflict with our needs.

Just a Closer Walk with Thee #2158
Just a closer walk with Thee, Grant it Jesus is my plea.
Daily walking close to Thee, Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

The Lord's
Prayer #2

"Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done"

Delivered 3/8/09

Prayer:

Intro:

Jesus said: “Kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent & believe Good News.”
God promised David He’d raise up his offspring, & they’d be Kings.
He’d establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
John saw the vision of angels who said the Messiah will reign forever & ever.”

Kingdom: a powerful word.

OT: David’s kingdom was in traditional sense.
Rev: Kingdom is final rule of God establishing final triumph of good over evil.
Jesus says it’s at hand.  Does it seem like good has won?  Look at papers…
War in Iraq, Tornadoes, murders, stealing, embezzling, greed, death & disease…
Is this Good News?

Where does that leave us?  In tension.
Jesus has come, died for our sins, risen & freed us from sin & death.
But… sin still exists.

 Greek: basileia
Royal power, dominion, rule, Kingdom, reign, reign of Christ,
Root: to walk, of sole of the foot
Image of winning wrestler with foot on top of opponent, holding them down w/ foot.
Subduing opponent.

Jesus uses Kingdom of God in parables.
Kingdom of God like… seeds, found penny, celebrating family w/ return of lost son, 99th sheep found, stranger/enemy caring for beaten & robbed person on the road.
These are good, gentle, loving images.
Not time, place, but ideal, w/in our hearts

Your Kingdom Come:

Make things the way they’re supposed to be.
Come & reign in this world.  Make it like Revelation…
Throw Evil One into lake of burning sulfur.  Bring on New Heaven & New Earth.

Make it like the parables…  Make my heart/life like parables:
Make my heart fertile soil for your love…
Make my heart rejoice having found your love
Make me rejoice at return of those lost
Give me compassion for those in need, even if they are my enemies.
Don’t let me have any enemies, help me make peace w/ them.
Help me have faith that grows to be like majestic tree.

Your Will be done…

Let Your will be done in my life.  Is it a difficult prayer?
In our mind: know God’s way is best…  Know our way is more difficult.
Know God’s will ultimately come about.
We still stammer through: “I don’t know Lord…”
We’re afraid… we want control… or illusion of control
Imagine if God’s will really was done on earth.
Wonderful –dramatic changes.

What would this look like?

What would be different in world?

Would people kill each other, starve, die of curable diseases, send men & women to die in wars, bomb schools, take advantage of poor, hurt each other?

What would be different in our community?

What would be different in our church?

What would be different in your life?

The Lord's
Prayer #1

"Our Father in Heaven - Holy is Your Name"

Delivered 3/1/09

Prayer:

Intro:

“Lord, teach us to pray…”
Time Lord’s Prayer – (20-25 seconds.)  How do you feel about that?
Its 38 words in GK, 38NRSV, 34NIV, 57KJV… “For Thine is kingdom…” extra 12 words
Jesus meant it to be succinct – and sufficient
Powerful communication - No fluff –every word important

Our Father        GK: Pater        Aramaic: Abba

Max Lucado’s abba illustration: In Jerusalem, watching family cross the street:
A girl 4-5 years old fell a little behind, called out “Abba,” he heard her, reached out & grabbed her hand.
At curb she stepped into street, he pulled her back.
In middle of street he scooped her up & carried her across street.

Isn’t that what we all need? An abba who will hear when we call? Who will take our hand when we’re weak? Who will guide us through the hectic intersections of life? Don’t we all need an abba who will swing us up into his arms and carry us home? We all need a father.   (The Great House of God)

Best equivalent: “Daddy”
This was a revolutionary idea.
Jeremais called it: “… a homely, family word.”
Jews would have been astounded & offended.
My kids still say: “Daddy” –It means world to me.
What do you think it means to God when we say we are His?

Who is in Heaven:

God is. God was. God will be.  YHWH
A runner was out for daily run.
Breathed in September air, saw the extra cars, & yellow buses.
Then the runner saw a child & called out – “Have a great first day at school!”
“How did you know?” The child was amazed.
Runner: “Well I just know these kinds of things.”
Runner’s perspective is higher than child’s.
God’s perspective is so much greater than ours.

Holy is Your Name

One night in Oswego, I was up at 4AM w/ Mikki.
I looked out the window at stars & saw the northern lights.
I was awed & mesmerized.  Who could have done this, but God?
Psalm 8:3-5 “Who are we that You should notice us?
Yet, You made us just a little bit lower than God.”
Sun: 1 sq. yard = 130,000 horsepower, 450 V8 engines.
Its only 1 minor star in 100 billion in the Milky Way.
Earth: 6 sextillion tons 6 w/ 21 zero’s.  It’s tilted at 23 degrees any more or less & seasons would be lost in a melted polar flood.
The Earth revolves at 1000 MPH, 25,000 miles/day or 9 million miles/year
None of us tumble off ground into orbit.
Next time you see awesome sunset, sky full of stars, scene that takes breath away… say nothing & listen
Listen to voice that says:
“Do you like it? I did it just for you.”
In midst of daily storms, make it a point to be still, set you sights on Him.
Let God be God. Let Him bathe you in His glory.  Be still. Be quiet. Be open & willing.
Then you will know God is God, and can’t help but confess: “Hallowed be Thy name.”

Old Testament Leaders #4

King David

Delivered 2/8/2009

David’s Accomplishments as King

Saul & Jonathan were killed in battle (1 Sam. 31)

David writes a song lamenting their deaths

He consults the Lord whether to move back & where

            David crowned king of Judah

            Ishbosheth crowned King of Israel

2 years of civil war, then Ishbosheth is assassinated

David becomes King of all Israel

He attacks Jersalem, occupied by the Jebusites,

He conquers the city by entering through its water tunnel

The Philistines try to capture David, but he consults the Lord & Israel prevails

David moves the ark to Jerusalem (after consultation w/ the Lord)

David consults the prophet Nathan about building a temple for the Lord

The Lord replies through Nathan that his son will build the temple because David was a warrior

God blesses David with the promise that his house & kingdom will last forever.

16 Your house and your kingdom will continue before me for all time, and your throne will be secure forever.’ ” (2 Sam. 7:16)

David’s military victories continue & Israel’s influence & territory grows

David & Bathsheba

“In the Spring” David is home & notices a beautiful woman bathing…

He finds out she’s married, but commits adultery any way.

She gets pregnant

David tries to cover things up by bringing her husband home for a “furlough”

Uriah refuses to be with his wife since his men are away in battle.

David becomes desperate & has Uriah killed in battle.

He sends a letter to Joab, the commander

15 The letter instructed Joab, “Station Uriah on the front lines where the battle is fiercest. Then pull back so that he will be killed.” (2 Sam. 11:15)

David brings Bathsheba into the palace & marries her.

Nathan confronts David & tells him of his sin… & David repents

“Now the Lord has put away your sin; you shall not die. 14 Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the Lord, the child that is born to you shall die.” (2 Sam. 11:14)

Psalm 51 is David’s prayer of forgiveness.

The child becomes deathly ill, and David mourns & prays for the baby, but it dies.

He and Bathsheba mourn the baby’s death,

After the appointed time, David comforts Bathsheba & she conceives again.

They name the baby Solomon.

" To the leader: A Psalm of David, when the prophet Nathan came to him, after he had [committed adultery with] Bathsheba.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.

Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgment. Indeed, I was born guilty, a sinner when my mother conceived me.

You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit.

Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your deliverance. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. For you have no delight in sacrifice; if I were to give a burnt offering, you would not be pleased. The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise." (Psalm 51:1-17, NRSV)

God’s Redemptive Power

We should know the name Solomon…

Solomon eventually becomes the King of Israel.

He’s the one who builds the Temple for the Lord.

He’s the one who is given the opportunity to ask the Lord for anything…

He asks for wisdom to rule the nation of Israel.

David

1 Sam. 16:1-7, 9-13; 1 Sam. 16:14-23 1 Sam. 17:1-11; 48-50

Delivered 2/1/09

Samuel Anoints David

Samuel grieves over Saul

God calls Samuel to anoint someone else to be King

Samuel goes to Jesse to anoint one of his sons

The Lord tells Samuel not to anoint any of the older sons

7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” (1 Sam. 16:7)

Jesse calls David out of the fields

The Lord tells Samuel David is the one to anoint

David Becomes Saul’s Harpist

The Spirit of the Lord departs from Saul & an evil one torments him

His servants suggest a harpist, David, sons of Jesse, to calm his spirit

David goes to Jerusalem & plays the harp for Saul

Saul’s spirit is soothed & David enters into service for Saul.  (notice the irony)

It seems that whenever Saul was tormented, they would call for David & he would come from home and play for Saul.

David & Goliath

The Philistines came and camped, ready to make war with the Israelites

Saul & his army came out to defend Israel

Goliath, the giant, hurls insults at the Israelites & defies one of them to fight him.

Saul & Israel are terrified

16 For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand.      (1 Sam. 17:16)

Jesse sent David to bring provisions to his older brothers who were at the battle.

David hears what’s going on, and wants to help.

He is not afraid at all…

Saul hears about David & sends for him.

David says he will go out and fight Goliath, he’s not afraid, the Lord will deliver him.

Saul offers him armor, but is too big & too bulky

David decides to fight Goliath without armor, only using his sling

1 Sam. 17:43 the Goliath curses David by his gods

The giant approaches David to engage in battle, but before he can lay a hand on him, David takes a rock, puts it in his sling & hurls it at the giant

He hits the giant in the head & kills him.

The Israelites attack the rest of the Philistines & slaughter most of them sending them far into their own territory.

Saul Grows Jealous of David

It doesn’t appear that Saul remembered David

He asks who’s son he is & David tells him he’s Jesse’s son.

Saul’s son, Jonathan, becomes great friends with David

David stays Saul & doesn’t go back to Jesse

5 Whatever Saul sent him to do, David did it so successfully that Saul gave him a high rank in the army. This pleased all the people, and Saul’s officers as well. (1Sam. 18:5)

Saul becomes more and more jealous of David

10 The next day an evil spirit from God came forcefully upon Saul. He was prophesying in his house, while David was playing the harp, as he usually did. Saul had a spear in his hand 11 and he hurled it, saying to himself, “I’ll pin David to the wall.” But David eluded him twice.            (1 Sam. 18:10-11)

Saul puts David in charge of the Army hoping the Philistines will kill him.

David continues to be very successful in battle, making Saul even more jealous & fearful

28 When Saul realized that the LORD was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David, 29 Saul became still more afraid of him, and he remained his enemy the rest of his days. (1Sam. 18:28-29)

David Lives on the Run

David has to flee from Saul because he openly tries to kill him.

While Saul is pursuing David, David has the opportunity to kill Saul twice, but does not because he is the Lord’s Anointed.

He even has to hide in Philistine territory to be safe from Saul (1 Sam. 27)

Saul stoops so low as to inquire of the Witch of Endor (1 Sam. 28)

The witch conjures up Samuel & he speaks to Saul

16 Samuel said, “Why do you consult me, now that the LORD has turned away from you and become your enemy? 17 The LORD has done what he predicted through me. The LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors—to David. 18 Because you did not obey the LORD or carry out his fierce wrath against the Amalekites, the LORD has done this to you today. 19 The LORD will hand over both Israel and you to the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The LORD will also hand over the army of Israel to the Philistines.” (1 Sam. 28:16-19)

Saul Finally Dies Battling the Philistines

David can begin to bring the Empire together

He’s anointed King of the House of Judah

Saul’s son, Ish-Bosheth, fights to keep the Southern Kingdom & there’s civil war for a couple years.

Once David wins, he moves the Capital to Jerusalem & unifies the nation.

Saul

1 Sam. 9:1-6, 15-20; 1 Sam. 10:17-24

Delivered 1/25/09

Samuel Meets Saul (by Chance?)

Saul’s father, Kish, loses his donkeys & sends his son, Saul, to find them.

In Zuph, Kish’s servant tells Saul about the Prophet, Samuel (also called a seer)

They go to him…

Samuel had been told by God he’d see a man from Benjamin –> anoint him King

Samuel sees Saul & invites him to dinner.

The Next morning, Samuel tells Saul he will be anointed King

Saul Becomes King

Samuel tells Saul 3 things that will happen along the way

God changes Saul’s heart – He begins to prophesy

Samuel summons all Israel & reminds them that they rejected God & asked for a King

“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the power of Egypt and all the kingdoms that oppressed you.’ 19 But you have now rejected your God, who saves you out of all your calamities and distresses. And you have said, ‘No, set a king over us.’ So now present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and clans.”(1 Sam. 10:18)

The Ammonites besiege Jabeth Gilead, they’re about to surrender

They call to the rest of Israel for help

Saul hears the news, summons all Israel, & slaughters the Ammonites

Saul is reaffirmed King

Samuel says farewell to the People of Israel.  His speech is in 1 Sam. 12:8-25

Samuel Rebukes Saul

Saul sets out to attack the Philistines

Jonathan attacks the Philistine outpost & all the Philistines assemble for battle

Israel is very afraid of them.

Saul sends for Samuel

Samuel doesn’t come by the time they expect him, the people start leaving the battleground…

Saul calls for the burnt offering & fellowship offerings.  He offers them up himself.

Samuel arrives & tells him the great mistake he’s made: “You acted foolishly,” Samuel said. “You have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time. 14 But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people, because you have not kept the LORD’s command.” (1 Sam. 13:13, 14)

Saul is left with only 600 men, none of them have weapons.

Jonathan attacks a band of 20 Philistines & kills them all.

Panic strikes the whole Philistine army, the earth shakes, a panic sent by God

All Israel hears that the Philistines are on the run & join forces again.

The Lord rescued Israel that day.

Saul Makes Another Mistake

Samuel charges Saul with attacking the Amalekites & destroying everything.

Saul attacks & starts destroying them like God told him to.

He keeps the King, the best sheep, cattle, goats & lambs, but destroys everything that’s weak.

God speaks to Samuel because he didn’t carry out his word completely.

Samuel finds Saul on Mt. Carmel ready to sacrifice the animals there.

Saul thought that would be fine, but it wasn’t what God had told him to do…

Samuel tells Saul that he’s rejected God & sinned.

Saul replies: “I have sinned. I violated the LORD’s command and your instructions. I was afraid of the people and so I gave in to them. 25 Now I beg you, forgive my sin and come back with me, so that I may worship the LORD.” (1 Sam. 15:24-25)

Samuel says that God will reject him as king & make someone else King.

Both times that Saul sins, it’s because he’s afraid of the people’s reactions…

1st he’s afraid they will abandon him against the Philistines & he sacrifices.

2nd he’s afraid of the people, so he gives them the spoils of the battle when everything supposed to be destroyed.

Fear is at the root of Saul’s sins, a bad motivation for a King.

He feared the people more than he trusted God.

Where has our fear led us astray?

It cost Saul his Kingdom, what has it cost us…

…as a church?

…and as individuals?

**God spoke to Samuel & Saul through situations, by inspiring them with the Holy Spirit, and through the importance of following His commands.

**Saul showed what can happen when fear gets in the way of following God’s instruction.

Samuel

1 Sam. 1:9-20 & 1 Sam. 3:1-10

Delivered 1/18/09

Hannah Longs for a Baby:

Elkanah has 2 wives: Penninah has children, Hannah is barren.

Penninah would tease her and make her cry about it.

Elkanah loved Hannah & felt very sorry that she had no children of her own.

Elkanah made yearly sacrifices at Temple in Shiloh

Hannah’s vow one year in Shiloh: “O LORD Almighty, if you will only look upon your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.”(1 sam. 1:11)

Eli the Priest hears her prayer & weeping, she explains her situation & Eli blesses her: “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.” (1 Sam. 1:17)

Hannah gets pregnant, has a son, names him Samuel which means: Named of God.

Hannah keeps her promise to the Lord & brings Samuel to serve in the Temple.

God Calls Samuel:

Samuel ministers under Eli the Priest.  He’s going blind… (a Seer who can’t see?)

In those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions. (1 Sam. 3:1)

God calls to Samuel one night – Samuel thinks its Eli.  Eli sends him back to bed.

God calls to Samuel again – Samuel thinks its Eli.  Eli sends him back to bed again.

God calls to Samuel a third time – Samuel goes t Eli.  Eli finally realizes its God calling.  He sends Samuel back to bed & says: “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’”(1 Sam. 3:9)

God calls, Samuel answers God, God foretells to Samuel the destruction & punishment that is about to come to Eli & his sons for their sinfulness.

Eli is eager to hear God’s Word to Samuel.  Samuel is reluctant, but Eli presses him.

Samuel tells Eli the prophecy of  his destruction.

Eli says: He is the LORD; let him do what is good in his eyes.” (1 Sam. 3:18)

Samuel grows up & becomes strong Physically & Spiritually.

The Philistines Capture the Ark of the Covenant:

The Israelites went out to fight the Philistines & are defeated.  3000 men die.

They go and get the Ark so that God will be with them & wage battle again.

They didn’t consult God about this.  Eli’s sons bring the Ark to the battle.

The Israelites cheer when the Ark arrives, the Philistines hear their battle cry.

The Philistines attack, win the battle, capture the Ark, & Eli’s sons die in the battle.

A man runs from the battle to tell Eli about the Ark & his sons.

Eli is sitting at the entrance of the Temple, he hears the news, falls back in his chair & dies.

The Philistines bring the Ark to their capital, Ashdod & place it in the temple near their god.

The idol, Dagon, falls down in front of the Ark.  Its head & hands had broken off.

God punished the Philistines of Ashdod giving them tumors.

Ashdod passes the Ark on to another city & the same thing happens.

The Philistines finally give the Ark back to the Israelites.

Samuel subdues the Philistines & becomes Judge of the Israelites.

The Ark remained in Kiriath Jearim in Israel, but not at the Temple for 20 years.

Israel mourned & sought after the Lord

Samuel calls the people to repentance.  He says, “Put away your foreign gods, commit yourselves to the LORD and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.”(1 Sam. 7:3)

Samuel calls all Israel to gather at Mizpah & prepare for battle.

Samuel consults the Lord on Israel’s behalf & the people call him their leader.

The Philistines try and attack while Samuel is still sacrificing to the Lord.

The Lord sends thunder & terrifies the Philistines.

Israel routs them & pushes them back out of the territory.

There is peace in Israel all the rest of Samuel’s life because Samuel is true to the Lord.

Israel Asks for a King:

The people of Israel see that other nations have a king & want one for themselves.

Samuel is very upset, takes it as a rejection of him.

The Lord tells Samuel Israel is not rejecting Samuel, they are rejecting Him.

The Lord tells Samuel to go ahead and give Israel what they want even though it will lead to their ruin.

Samuel anoints Saul as their first King.

He will also anoint David as their next King after Saul loses favor in God’s eyes.
