VBS Music

If you are using special music for VBS, consider using the reproducible CDs or cassettes available from publishers to create copies for the children to take home. Children can bring a blank tape from home for copying, or you may find it easier to consider it part of the program & have the tapes available at the beginning of the week.

Encourage staff to learn the music before the week begins so they can be support in the learning process. Even those who don't read music can play a tape in the car while running errands.

The Music leader should have all songs and actions memorized by the first day of VBS. When the leader is confident the kids will be too. It breaks the flow (and possibly the the attention of the kids) to need to refer to notes.

Teachers can use music tapes playing in the background as children work on table activities.

Music time can be an active time slot giving the children a chance to expend some of their energy. Hand & body motions appropriate for the age groups add to the fun.

For preschool children it is helpful to have additional music, especially familiar songs and games, beyond the special VBS music.

Music is a great way of beginning the day as it fills the time while children are arriving & occupies those who have arrived early.

Music can also be a great way of ending the day. Sending the children home with a song in their minds may result in that tune staying with them through the afternoon. It also provides parents who arrive to pick up children the chance to hear their children singing.

As time permits, I will be working to add some of the classic children's songs to this site. Within the song list you will find links to pages with the lyrics and melody line and also MIDI files to provide the basic tune. A few poems not set to music are also included.
