VBS Missions

Regardless of the specific theme for the week, a mission project provides opportunities for valuable lessons to be shared with the children -- a chance to focus on sharing with others from our abundance; an opportunity to consider the gifts we have that so many of us take for granted.

Emphasis of the project can be worldwide or a local organization. Sometimes it may be possible to find a close link between the mission project & the VBS theme. A week spend "on a farm" could collect donations to be given to Heifer Project International.

If your children come from a wide range of backgrounds, the opportunity to contribute to a local charity such as a food bank may be particularly well-received.

Whatever organization is chosen, don't make assumptions that children and family members will know about the group. Provide descriptions of the goals of the organization. If items are to be contributed, provide specific suggestions of appropriate donations.

Displays of tangible items give feedback as the children see how each contribution adds to the supply. The display acts as a reminder for those not yet contributing. Be creative in your display -- collecting to purchase bicycles for missionaries in Africa? -- put together a bicycle, adding a part each day.
