Parish Hall
Building Project
Our New Building
Dreams do come true! On Sunday,
September 11, 2005 our long awaited
dream came true. We enthusiastically dedicated our new building and, as
planned, it occurred on the 153rd anniversary of our Mariposa United
Methodist Church. This event was the culmination of years of planning
and researching our requirements before building. We decreed it the
Joseph Kidd Parish Hall in honor of our retired pastor emeritus who
played a key role in its fruition. This new edifice replaces the old
Parish Hall built by volunteers in 1941 that continues now to reside at
the Christian Science Church.
The lower level of our new building
contains a large meeting room, a
spacious, modern kitchen and restrooms. Traveling youth groups can roll
out their sleeping bags on our floor and even enjoy the luxury of a
shower in one of our restrooms. The upper level contains the church
office which can be reach by a ramp from Bullion Street. This level
also includes the pastor's study, secretarial offices, a conference
room and additional restrooms. The upper level connects to the church
sanctuary by a wide, covered bridge which creates a shelter during
rainy weather for the lower level Sunday School area. Finally, the much
needed basement will provide adequate storage area for all the various
materials we have had to store in members' homes.
The old Parish House has supplied a
meeting place for Boy and Girl
Scouts and 4H groups adding to a total of 28 local groups using the
facilities regularly. We continue this tradition of making the new
meeting room available to non-profit community groups, especially youth
groups.
Our dream began by forming the
Horizon Committee that determined the
needs for each of the Church's organizations such as Sunday School,
choir, Bible Study group, UMW, Men's group etc. From this study, we
determined our priorities which included a room for the choir as they
were squeezed into the secretary's office, an adequate office for the
pastor, storage space and much needed restrooms off the sanctuary.
Methodist Women dreamed of a kitchen in which more than two people
could work. Joe Kidd called for a church vote on construction. It
passed. The Building Committee was formed to accomplish the myriad
details leading to construction that took countless meetings and
planning. Plans were drawn, finally approved and a contractor was
chosen.
Today we rejoice in this giant step
forward for our church. It is a
dream come true and one we readily wish to share with anyone searching
for a church. The Mariposa United Methodist Church is a family church
where everyone is welcomed home.
