Beliefs of United Methodist Christians United Methodist believe that we are called to be theologians. God calls us to clarify our faith, to put our beliefs into action, for ourselves and for others. We do this using four sources for guidelines recommended by John Wesley: The scriptures: as studied within the Christian fellowship, informed both by scholarly inquiry and the Holy Spirit; The church's tradition: the ever renewed understandings of the faith community down through the ages; Our own Christian experience: the personal experience of God's healing love, the gift of new life in Christ; Our reason: our capacity to analyze, compare and come to sound judgments. The United Methodist Church invites us, using these four guidelines, to "understand our faith in God's love, known in Jesus Christ, more and more profoundly and to give this love more and more effective witness in word, work, mission and life." (The Book of Discipline)
