Help for Haiti:

We are collecting the following items for health kits and layette kits for Haiti:

Health Kit
  • 1 hand towel (16" X 28")
  • 1 wide tooth comb
  • 1 nail clipper
  • 1 bar of soap (bath size in wrapper)
  • 1 washcloth
  • 6 Band-Aids
  • 1 toothbrush (in original packaging)
  • Seal all items in a one-gallon plastic bag with zipper closure. Toothpaste will be added by Church World Service
Layette Kit
  • 6 cloth diapers
  • 2 diaper pins
  • 2 t-shirts or undershirts (no onesies)
  • 2 washcloths
  • 2 gowns or sleepers
  • 1 sweater or sweatshirt
  • 2 receiving blankets (1 can be hand knitted)
  • All items must be new and under 12 months in size. Bundle inside one receiving blanket and secure with diaper pins.
Shalom House homeless shelter for women is looking for volunteers on weekdays between 8:00AM and 4:30PM to help prepare meals for future use. No need to bring food, just your skills and cheerfulness.

Needs for Kingdom House Family Center:*
  • Two new full front doors with hardware and installation
  • Dishwasher for the youth program
  • Stackable washer and dryer for the day care center (Already donated by Maplewood UMC! Praise the Lord!)
Other current needs:
  • Crib sheets for day care
  • Bibs
  • Someone to sew sheets for children’s cots. We have a pattern for you to use.
  • Items for homeless “care packages”
    • Sample size:
      • Toothpaste
      • Toothbrushes
      • Deodorant
      • Soap
  • Wash cloths
*Kingdom House is a United Methodist social service agency which has been serving residents of the Near Southside of St. Louis since 1902. Of prime concern is the provision of social and community services for families, children and individuals under stress, including child care, and direct material relief. Maplewood United Methodist supports Kingdom House through regular donations of non-perishable food items.

Service opportunity for February and March: Beginning February 24, Rev. Shay Blackwell, a member of Maplewood UMC, will be teaching parenting classes for the community at our church on Wednesday evenings. Supper and child care will be provided beginning at 6:30PM. Volunteers are needed to prepare and serve meals, and to provide child care. Expenses will be reimbursed by the church. Please contact Shay at 314-971-0626.

“Feed and Be Fed”
The first Sunday of each month, please bring canned goods or other food items to church. Here’s the “shopping list:”
  • Ramen noodles—all flavors
  • Tuna and Chicken Helper®
  • Canned tuna and chicken
  • Canned fruit
  • Fresh fruit
  • Fruit snacks
  • Mac ’n’ cheese
  • Boxed potatoes—mashed, au gratin, hash brown
  • Family packs of cookies—all kinds
  • Pancake mix—just add water kind
  • Peanut butter, jelly, and bread
  • Cereal—all kinds
  • Snack items—Cheese crackers, pretzels, wheat crackers, microwave popcorn, tortilla chips, dip, bagels
  • Fruit juice
  • Cereal bars
  • Granola bars
  • Spaghetti and sauce
  • Canned soups—including chunky style
  • Chili
  • Beef stew
  • Chicken ’n’ dumplings
  • String cheese
  • Flavored rice and noodle packets

Joe’s Place offers homeless teenage boys in the Maplewood/Richmond Heights School District a supervised, caring home environment, supporting them in graduating from high school and creating positive futures for themselves. Maplewood United Methodist is one of several area churches supporting Joe’s place. We contribute basic household needs.
