For the most part, we United Methodists do a pretty good job of letting our general church put its tremendous resources to work on the large majority of causes to which we can all (or mostly all) support. Our united stand on a variety of very important social issues is outlined in our Social Creed, a document that is updated every four years.
There is a huge exception to this. The question of whether a homosexual person is automatically unfit for our ordained ministry threatens to tear us apart. By a close vote (60/40%) our world denomination decided that no homosexual person who admits to being so may be ordained, and that no United Methodist pastor may bless the union of two people of the same gender.
A large majority of our congregation disagrees with this decision. There are some of us who agree with it, and like good United Methodists, we have agreed to disagree about the matter, as good Methodists ought. We thought you should know where we stand.
