Devotional Thought

Picture of Pastor Ellen Cleaves

Hi Everyone,

I humbly ask your forgiveness for getting out only one thought last week (although my mind certainly was active!). We had grandchildren here to visit and well–you know–how that can go. Juliana of Norwich was a nun who lived in England from 1342-1416. I have found some of her mystical writings interesting. One quote from her is ‘We are so preciously loved by God that we cannot even comprehend it. No created being can ever know how much and how sweetly and tenderly God loves them’. Isn’t that a wonderful thought? Juliana of Norwich lived in a time of uncertainty and upheaval in Europe. Her current events included the Black Death and a series of peasant revolts. The popular theology assumed that God was punishing the wicked. But Julian held onto a theology which spoke of God’s love and mercy for humankind. She believed that although hell was a reality—the greater mystery was God’s love for His creation. I think in our days of uncertainty our theology of God’s abundant love will serve us well. To remain optimistic Christians will help us see the joy in our daily lives. I John 4:16 is the reference for you to go to in your Bible. And know that God is love!!

Be at peace,

Pastor Ellen

P.S.

In case you don’t know it–I am on call this week and next to be available for my daughter, Amanda, whose baby is due on Aug 2. I will go to Lisbon when the call comes!! Keep her in prayer, please.
