SUSANA
WESLEY HOUSE
In
Viama, Brazil
“We had
work, we were spanked and all the body hurt, we had headache and pain in the
arms, neck and back. He used to
sell the furniture and when we got home we couldn’t eat, when we ate we had to
eat very fast otherwise he spanked us and my mother.
My mother couldn’t move, she had pain.
Sometimes she was spanked for nothing or because she saved us.”
Juliana
The above letter was written by a young women now
living at the Susana Wesley House in Viama, Brazil.
She, along with over 500 girls from 8 to 18 years of age, have been
helped through this Methodist Social Action Program which began in 1994.
This shelter continues to provide for girls and adolescents who are
victims of any kind of violence, offering in a fraternal and Christian
environment, the spiritual, social and psychological support, health and dental
care, nutritional and hygiene orientation and educational programs they need.
Our church has been providing financial assistance to
the Director, Eunice Fontoura Zimmermann since 1996.
A recent letter received from the director affirms their commitment and
dedication to providing a safe house for girls like Juliana.
Pictures of the “Casa Susana Wesley” and letters from the girls will
be posted on the bulletin board across from the Fellowship Hall.
Scripture tells us that mission is the activity of a
loving, caring God who desires that all people have life and have it abundantly.
(John 10:10) Mission is not an
optional program of the church, but its central and key responsibility. Mission is the means by which we spread the Gospel - the-Good
News of Jesus Christ. And being in
mission is the responsibility of every Christian - to love as Jesus loved, to
live as Jesus lived, to walk as Jesus walked. God’s mission is global in focus
and local in expression.
Our
annual covenant commitment towards support of the Director of the
Susana Wesley Safe House is $1,000.
