New Poll Shows Religion Has Little Effect on Americans' Views About War with Iraq

A new poll by the Pew Research Center and the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life shows religion has had little effect on Americans' views about war with Iraq. While 57 percent of those regularly attending religious services said their ministers, priests, or rabbis had spoken about the war, only 17 percent said religion was the biggest influence on their thinking about it. Seventy-seven percent of evangelical Protestants say they support the war, compared to 62 percent of Catholics and mainline Protestants. Only 36 percent of African-American Protestants say they support the war.      .....

Americans Greet News of War with Special Prayers

As the first missiles hit Baghdad, some anti-war protests continued here, but for many Americans the debate changed. It was no longer whether to go to war, but how to minimize the damage -- military, humanitarian, diplomatic, and even interfaith. We have special reports coming up.

Across the nation -- and across the religious spectrum -- Americans greeted news of war with special prayer services. Both supporters and opponents of the war prayed for the safety of U.S. troops and of Iraqi civilians. Many houses of worship are staying open for prayer during the duration of the war.

Web Site Facilitates Prayer Requests for U.S. Troops

Finally, there is a Web site called www.presidentialprayerteam.org that is encouraging prayers for American troops and their families. In just a few days, the organizers say they've received 88,000 prayer requests for U.S. troops. Three hundred eighty thousand have adopted military persons and their families, and promised to pray for them every day.
