Mission and Society Committee - Fund Raiser

Our next mission fund raiser is scheduled for March 18, 2006, 6PM to 8:30PM.  Entitled "Empty Bowls Meal" this event will benefit the work of CUMAC/ECHO, whose mission in part is to provide food to individuals and families living below the poverty level and in urban settings.

This is a United Methodist Ministry. The service will be guided by Rev. Patricia Bruger, Executive Director of CUMAC/ECNO and Rev. Robert L. Boettner.

For reservations please contact Church Administrative Assistant Jane Furman at 201 944 2970 or a committee member: Ellie Spiegel at 201 947 9231 or Gwendolyn Ash at 201 585 9932.

The meal will take place in the Fellowship Hall of the LUMC corner of Broad Avenue and Woodridge Place in Leonia.  The suggested offering is $10 per person.

Wentworth Organ Recital - an annual event in April

This year the Wentworth Organ Concert will be on Sunday April 23, 2006 7:30PM at 396 Broad Avenue (at Woodridge Place).  It's free, but not for much longer.

Overflow Homeless Shelter Program

The St. Cecilia's facility is temporarily closed. Once reopened please contact Ellie Spiegel hansle@ix.netcom.com to take part in this important outreach program.  In September this year we need volunteers to prepare a dinner and to host (stay overnight) at St. Cecilia's facility in Englewood, New Jersey.

And, in December and January each year we host the overflow shelter at our church building - one night each week for two months.  The program was a success once again finishing up this past January 2006 - thanks to the leadership of the Stott family.  Next time to undertake this mission will arrive soon enough so we will need volunteers to prepare dinner for up to ten guests, provide the makings for lunch and breakfast; and two hosts to stay with our guests overnight.

There are always some blank spaces on the sign-up chart in Tyson Hall.

If you done this before you know how satisfying it is to help some people temporarily 'down on their luck'.

Retreat at Aldersgate Camp and Conference Center

Our church retreat will be re-scheduled because of a fire a the Aldersgate Conference Center in Swartswood, New Jersey.  Once a new location is identified - Registration forms will be available at the church or if you request, a form will be sent to you by email.

This is a popular annual event open to all members and friends of the church.  There are no age or other restrictions.  For parents thinking about sending a child to the Aldersgate summer camp program, this retreat would be a wonderful opportunity to see the facilities.

If you have not yet been to Aldersgate Conference Center the site boasts over 200 wooded acres, several streams, a private lake and a beautiful waterfront property overlooking Swartswood Lake.

Lodgings and meals and the retreat leader and programs are all included in the very reasonable per person charge.  Not everyone is overflowing with cash these days, accordingly scholarships (free weekend) are available.  Please contact the pastor or Ruth Elsinger.
