The Past
The history of the United
Methodist Church dates back to 1738 England and the spiritual
revival begun by John Wesley.
Three church edifices
have stood on the ground now occupied by the Ledyard Church. The
records do not show how or when the Methodists of Ledyard Church
came in to possession of their first "meeting house", but there are
evidences that in 1833 they were comfortably housed in a frame
structure with huge timbers and which was, for those early days, a
pretentious church. It is probable that this house was erected the
year of the organization of the church, although regular Methodist
preaching had been held for some time prior to this date.
Over the course of time,
a desire was awakened in the hearts of the people to build a better
house for the worship of God and accordingly some time in the late
forties the old meeting house was removed to a new location to make
way for the second edifice for the use of the Methodists in Ledyard.
The original building stood nearby for many years at the Haines
homestead on Route 34B south of Ledyard.
The second church was
fair indeed, but time made even that building to need extensive
repairs, and under the pastorate of Reverend Elias Hoxie, it was
remodeled within and renovated without to meet the needs of a new
generation. But its new glory was to be of short duration for in the
succeeding pastorate, it was consumed by fire on February 8, 1873.
The only relic rescued from the flames was the clock which now hangs
upon the wall of the third edifice.
Out of the ashes of the
second church arose the present church builidng, a fair temple of
the Lord. Its dedication occurred on January 6, 1875, with the whole
cost of $6,500 provided for at that time. Redecorations have been
made three times, in 1891, 1911, and 1947. More recently in 1983,
the exterior was extensively refurbished. Over $12,000 was raised
with the help of current and past parishoners. Contributions came
from as far away as California. The church was restored to its
original colors; white vinyl siding, accented by blue-gray trim.
