News Around the Church & Community

Everyone is welcome to join us each Saturday at 6 pm for a Praise Service. What is our Praise Service? Our Praise service has two purposes. First, it is an opportunity for Lakehills UMC members to meet on Saturday nights, sing songs and celebrate our love of God. Second, it is an outreach program of this church to reach the un-churched and get them to participate at Lakehills UMC.
The Praise and Worship service can only be successful if the congregation supports our efforts. We need the congregation to bring their neighbors and friends to this service. We need the congregation to help spread the word so we can get more people to attend. This program is not the new 8 am service and all that went with that service. The Praise Service is informal, fun, lively and upbeat fellowship that needs YOUR help to succeed.
All coordination and planning of the Praise Service goes through Everett McCarley. If you have any questions or suggestions, please call him on his cell phone at 210-286-7001.

2009 Buoy Awards
Do
you know who donated the land for the little league baseball fields in
Lakehills? How about the person who
donated the land for the Heliport and fire department in Mico?
Do you know whose vision it was to have a library in Lakehills?
The Medina Lake Preservation Society (MLPS) Board of Directors knows
these lake neighbors and wants publicly to say “Thank You.”
Lakehills
United Methodist Church members Cappi and Stanley Phillips, Loy Ed Alanis, and
Betty Baxter are among this year’s Buoy recipients. Please join us in congratulating these
deserving members of the LakePlex community.

2009
Church Conference
Each
year, our District Superintendent goes to each church in his district to meet
with committee chairs and go over the past year.
The chairpersons will have the opportunity to present an oral report on
what they have accomplished in the past year and goals for the future.
There
is a membership audit, during which the names of those who have not attended
worship during the year are read, and those attending can let the membership
secretary know their whereabouts.
Members whose names are read off for two consecutive years will be
removed from the roles due to inactivity.
A
report showing operating and program expenses will be presented, as well as the
pastor’s compensation report.
The
names of those who are nominated for
various committees will be
presented by the Nominations Committee for approval
and the goals for the coming year will be discussed.
We
have a new candidate for the Local Pastor Program.
Everett McCarley is beginning his journey to become a Local Pastor.
Once done with the program, Everett will be authorized to perform all the
duties of an ordained minister, including the sacraments, while assigned to a
particular church under the supervision of a district superintendent.
We as a congregation will take a vote to recommend him to the district
committee on ordained ministry.
Our Church Conference will be Tuesday, November 17th at 7 pm. There’s a lot that will be going on. Everyone has important input. All members are invited to attend, and will have a vote on all issues that are discussed.

Advent
Ever
wonder about advent and what it means? The
word “advent” is Latin and it means “to come”.
The season of Advent marks the beginning of the church year and comprises
the four weeks before Christmas. The
church has observed a season of preparation before Christmas since the
appearance of regulations on fasting issued by Bishop Perpetuus of Tours in 490
AD.
The
principal themes of advent are hope, darkness and light, repentance,
watchfulness, preparation, expectation of the incarnation of Christ on Christmas
and anticipation of the fullness of time at Christ's second coming.
Here
at Lakehills UMC, we celebrate with four special Sunday worship services.
On the first Sunday, a candle in the advent wheel is lit for hope, the
second, peace, the third, joy and the fourth, love.
The last candle, the Christ candle, is lit on Christmas Eve.
Sunday, November 29th is the 1st Sunday of Advent this year during which we will have a Hanging of the Greens celebration. This is when the Christmas decorations are put up. We hope you can join us!
