UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

HISTORY

The legacy of the Kopperl United Methodist Church reaches back to the year 1892, when one dollar was paid to the Santa Fe railroad for a piece of property known as Lot 10, Block 29, in Kopperl. The first trustees of the church included J. A. Cottinghamn, W. D. Eaton, D. M. Finley, and F. Shook. Rev Strange served as the first pastor of the church, followed by Rev J. D. Crockett in 1893. The children of Reverend and Mrs. Crockett served as long-time teachers in the Kopperl community and in Sunday schools.

In 1920, the Kopperl Methodist Church organized a women’s group known as “The Women’s Society.” In 1920, the group started with five members and a weekly pledge of two-cents per member for mission work. Caring on into the 21st century, the women of the church continued to play an important role in forming prayer groups, visitation programs, educational programs, and Bible studies.

By 1924, the congregation had outgrown the lot and one-room church built in 1892. Therefore, the church voted to buy additional land “uptown” on Block 19, Lots 11 through 16—the current location of Kopperl United Methodist Church. Built by local carpenters and men of the church, this building was dedicated to Rev Z. A. Howell.

On a Sunday afternoon in April 1941, the church suffered a great tragedy as the building and furniture burnt to the ground. Although church members were saddened to see the church they had lovingly built and cared for in ashes, their spirit did not falter and a new church was built under the leadership of Rev J. W. Sprinkle and through the time, labor, money, and love of church members. Following the dedication of the church building on June 28, 1942, thee classrooms were added onto the west side of the building in 1962 and the fellowship hall, kitchen, and restrooms were added in 1988. In 1991, several lots across the street from the church were purchased for youth activities, recreational grounds, and parking.

For more than 110 years, the people of Kopperl United Methodist Church have faithfully sought to practice lives of discipleship through worship, service, missions, Christian education, and fellowship. Not only do the members of this church gather each Sunday to worship and praise God, but truly seek to live out the great commandment of Jesus Christ to love God with all of their heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love their neighbors as themselves.
