"Fire Carriers" Below: Fire Carrier Brings the Fire The traditional symbol for Pentecost is fire, more specifically tongues of fire from heaven. Pentecost is also when we remember the giving of the Holy Spirit to the church after the ascension of our Lord. Thus, the Holy Spirit and fire from the early day of Christianity have been closely connected. In ancient Indian culture one of the most important persons of the tribe was the fire carrier. It was his responsibility to tend the fire when the people were camped and to transport it when they moved from place to place. Below: Fire Carrier Leaves the Fire
Don Swank is the fire carrier. At the beginning of the service, in full
planes Indian regalia, he will bring in the fire as a symbol of the presence of
the Holy Spirit in our midst. At the end of the service he will be inviting us
to join him in being fire carriers, carriers of the Holy Spirit, into the places
where we live, work and play. In his message Rev. Hogsett will be sharing a
vision of what it has meant, what is now means, and what it continues to mean
for Trinity Church to be a fire carrier.
