AN ADVENTURE IN PRAYER | A DAY OF CELTIC SPIRITUALITY | OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD | THE CHRISTIAN SERVANT | THE CHRISTIAN MAN | HEALING AND WHOLENESS | Retreats to Meet Your Needs AN ADVENTURE IN PRAYERAn Adventure in Prayer is a retreat on various forms of prayer including confession, prayer walking, The Labyrinth, body prayer, Tsung Kido, praying through Iconography, and so on and so on. Through teaching and praying the prayer forms one is opened to greater ways of connecting with God.A DAY OF CELTIC SPIRITUALITYLearn about the unique style of Christianity that was birthed by the Gaelic peoples. Hear of its history, learn of its symbols, explore its theology, and experience its prayers, hymns, and the Celtic way of "Listening to the Heart of God" through praying the Scriptures. The day begins and ends with Celtic style worship. OFF TO SEE THE WIZARDThis family retreat is based on the book by Christian author, Frank Baum, and the movie, The Wizard of Oz. Baum's book was made into a wonderful children's movie (which you will see during the course of this day long or overnight retreat), but was intended as an allegory of the Christian's journey of faith. The yellow brick road recalls Heaven's golden streets and the relationship with Christ that is more precious than gold. We so often begin our Christian journey after some of life's stormy weather has uprooted us and we become tossed to and fro by the whirlwind of misfortune, or doubt, or temptation and trial. The retreat is an overview of the faith journey where participants are called to examine themselves and how they inwardly resemble the characters of the story and what that means for them in their relationship with God. Through lecture, discussion, and watching the video we will examine the spiritual symbolism and what it means for us and our journeys of faith. There will be time for self-reflection, journaling and sharing. The church is responsible for providing opening and closing worship experiences as well as refreshments and meals for participants, and housing is necessary for participants and Dr. Leaver. Teachers for younger children will be necessary if whole families are included. Dr. Leaver will be a resource person for the teachers and will have suggestions for what their time with the children should be. THE CHRISTIAN SERVANTThis retreat is meant not only for laity but would be of special interest for diaconal ministers and ordained clergy. The subject is Christian servanthood. The day long or overnight event consists of Bible study and discussion and sharing, as well as worship, prayer and quiet time for reflection. The event concludes with a service of foot washing. THE CHRISTIAN MANThis overnighter is meant for lay men. In a structured weekend format, this is a time for Christian men to worship and fellowship together, to do Bible study, and discuss issues facing men today in the workplace, at home, and in society in general. Helpful in this endeavor is to have a site where the men in small groups can take turns preparing the daily meals for the larger group. HEALING AND WHOLENESSThis is a weekend format, but can be conducted over a consecutive evenings. Participants will gain insight into the healing ministry of the Church through biblical, theological, and historical sources. Our time together will include study, lecture and discussion, end certain exercises. The aim is not only to educate believers in this ancient ministry of the church, but to encourage the formation of a healing ministry within the local church as a regular ongoing ministry. The retreat is a "commuters" retreat held at your local church for its members and pastoral staff, and other interested parties whom the church might invite. We conclude with a service of healing with anointing and the laying on of hands with prayer for healing. This retreat is an ideal way to introduce one's church to Christian healing. A 25 participant minimum is encouraged. Retreats to Meet Your NeedsIf you have not found a topic that meets your group's immediate needs, Dr. Leaver is available to discuss what it is you would like to have and could design a retreat around your topic or need. |
