PRAISE THE LORD! - August 2009

Do you know what the shortest chapter in the Bible is? It is Psalm 117. Do you know what the middle chapter of the Bible is? It is also Psalm 117.

From the New Living Translation we read:

Praise the LORD, all you nations.

Praise HIM, all you people of the earth.

For HE loves us with unfailing love,

The faithfulness of the LORD endures forever.

The placing of this psalm as the middle chapter of the Bible says to me that the original redactors of the scripture were making a theological statement. I could be wrong. It is just my opinion. But I believe they are saying that everything that comes before this point in the scriptures points to this eternal fact: God loves the whole earth and all the peoples on the planet, not just in "Bible-times," but forever.

And everything that follows this point shows that in spite of the faithfulness or unfaithfulness of the planet’s people, God’s love will be with us forever. So much so God will come to the planet God’s self to show us this fact of the steadfast, eternal love of God for every single person who has, who is, or who will exist on the planet.

A footnote from the Life Application Study Bible, p. 948 of the Personal Size edition says this:

Have you ever said, "I can’t think of anything that God has done for me. How can I praise him?" This psalm gives two reasons for praising God: his unfailing love toward us and his faithfulness that endures forever. If he did nothing else for us, he would still be worthy of our praise.

We might want to take another look at our life, as miserable as it may or as wonderful as it may be; as poor as you may be or as rich as you may be; as insignificant that you may feel or as important as you think you are, we all need to take an inward look, and realize we are loved, forever.

It is easy to think that when we are prosperous and healthy that God loves us. And it is often impossible to feel God’s love when we are impoverished and ill. But in either case, the reason to praise God is not for our condition, but because of God’s faithfulness and enduring love.

Do you realize you are so deeply loved that God came to the planet as God’s Son to give His life so that we might have life abundant and enjoy Him forever? Do you? You are so loved.

One of my church members, Janet Bevan, sent this to me: "Don’t tell God how big your storm is. Tell the storm how big your God is!

Try it.
