“Where MEDIOCRITY is the NORM, it is not long before MEDIOCRITY becomes the
IDEAL.”
MISSION
For 90 years, John Wesley United Methodist Church has
been a pillar of strength and a beacon of light in the Bedford-Stuyvesant
community. During that time we have served the ever changing needs of residents,
by addressing the spiritual, social, educational and economic aspects of their
lives.
In keeping with our commitment to assist and encourage youth to aspire to
greater heights, we are offering tutorial and after-school programs that will
provide academic growth and promote self and social awareness.
PURPOSE:
To strengthen and teach skills in math and reading through
remediation and homework assistance. To advance students six months to one year
above their present grade levels. To include parents as partners in all
activities of the program. To train youth as peer tutors and mentors.
TARGET GROUP:
Early Elementary through 9th Grades.
DAYS OF OPERATION during regular school
session:
Tuesday & Thursday afternoons, 3:15 PM to 5:45 PM. Snacks
will be served.
-
The
program served an average of 25 children (grades 1-8) from the church and
community each Tuesday & Thursday afternoon (except for holidays). This program now operates on weekdays.

-
The
program has expanded to the point that the church had to build additional space
to hold students.
-
Attendance
increases dramatically during preparation for citywide testing periods.
-
Students
have made dramatic progress thanks to our help
We are constantly in need of volunteers
for this program. The need for this program is so great and we could use
whatever assistance that can be provided. We also want to expand the program to
include GED courses as well, so we can serve the whole community.
