FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions) about John Wesley UMC
What’s special about this church? Our worship services use video, multimedia, popular and Christian music, dance and drama. Each of our worship services is designed to connect people with God and give a relevant message to us today. When the Methodist Church was started, our founder, John Wesley, envisioned a people that were “On Fire” for God. Therefore, we seek to make disciples of Jesus Christ and to know God through the study of Scripture, honoring tradition, using reason and experience as our guides for making decisions about issues we encounter in today’s world. What do we believe? At John Wesley, we believe that we have been called to serve God in many ways, including spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ, studying God’s Word and using it in our lives, reaching out to and serving with our community, encouraging people in their spiritual growth and worshiping in a way that everyone can share in knowing God’s love and power. Can anyone worship at John Wesley? Everyone is welcome at John Wesley. You do not need to be a member of a Methodist church or any church. As our guest, you will not be singled out in any way. We have an open table, which means anyone who professes Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior is welcome to take Communion in this church. Why does the church always ask for money? We take offerings at every worship service to support the work of our church and other ministry and mission projects both here and around the world. We don’t expect for anyone to give what they don’t have, just to give back some part of what God has blessed each of us with. We work toward Tithing because the Word tells us to bring 10% to the storehouse. God asks each of us to give as we have been given. It’s not all about money, God also asks us to participate in the life of the church by praying, attending regularly, sharing our gifts and performing acts of service. Do I have to dress up? No. God loves you, no matter what. We just want you to come and worship with us. I've been to church. There's not a long boring sermon, is there? We work to keep the sermons as brief and direct as possible. Children’s sermons, praise dance, dramatic skits, multimedia projections and inspirational music are also used to help communicate the message that God gives to us each week. Do I have to wait until I ‘get right’ before I give myself to Christ or decide to join the church? Absolutely not. At John Wesley, you will find people at various stages in their spiritual journey. Our worship services are insightful explorations of what God is saying to us today. Whether you've been a Christian for years, or are just starting your journey in faith, there's something for you at John Wesley. We don’t claim to be a perfect church, but we’re working on becoming a more loving, caring, faithful and prayerful community of Christians who are growing together in Christ under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We respond to that calling by ministering to all people that they may come to know and love Christ.
“… these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted upon my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” -Isaiah 56:7 |
