New Pictorial Directory in the Works With all the changes taking place in the church within the last five years (since our last directory was published) and with the addition of so many new members this year, the Administrative Council has determined that it is time for a new pictorial directory.
Betty Mahan who did a great deal of work on the last directory has graciously offered to coordinate the schedule of calling all members and folks related to the church family for pictures to be taken.  The photos will be taken at the church on Friday, May 17th from 3:00PM-9:00PM and concluding on Saturday, May 18th from 10:00AM-5:00PM.  If these are not convenient days, the photographers from Olan Mills will be in the area and it is possible for you to schedule into one of those opportunities.
The first Meeting with Olan Mills representative is April 10th at the church .  Very soon following this meeting anticipate a call from Betty and be prepared to tell her when you will be available to be scheduled for your photo.

A Service to Celebrate the Life and Resurrection of  Charles Perry Otto will be held on Friday, April 27th 11:00am at the church. Please continue to keep all the members of the Otto family in your prayers.

  Men’s News
Following our meeting in March the Men’s Group made a $100.00 contribution to C.E.R.T.S. and voted to purchase a riding lawn mower for the church.  Members of the Men’s Group will be making plans to rally the congregation to “shower” the new nursery with furnishings and toys. A list will be put together through a consultation process and members can sign-up to underwrite items on the list.
Our next meeting will be at Sunday 8:00AM, May 6th  at the home of Lois Lickley 691 E. 400 South.
If you have any questions, please give Scott McClure a call 324-2022.  Hope to see you there!

 From the Pastor
In the last newsletter the headlines had to do with the application for a loan to the Eastern District Mission Society.  Well, we got the loan.  The church building has been turned inside out and much of our March calendar was canceled or adjusted.  There have been many people who have pitched in to move furnishings, clean up, and paint.  They spent many hours doing these tasks. There was a wonderful spirit and communion in the work accomplished.  (During one afternoon expedition of cleaning, even more disconnected radiators were discovered and removed from the building.)   In the midst of it all, measurable progress has been made.  One of the striking examples is found in our new nursery.  It is quite impressive. There are two persons in particular, Jim Fetterly and Carl Nellis,  who have been most diligent and devoted to this project.  Thank and encourage them.   There is still more to be done.  By the time this newsletter reaches your home the heating and electrical work should be complete.  Then we can begin the work (which will be done by members of the congregation just like you) of:
· Installation of a new condensate return for the radiators in the sanctuary and parlor.
· Repairing and painting the walls downstairs.
· Repair of floor in fellowship hall and a classroom
· Installation of Counter-top and cabinets for the new work room.
· Moving the furniture and office equipment into the new spaces.
Without the concert of faithful brothers and sisters, we would not have been able to get this done within this time frame or have been able to afford it.  Its more than that, of course.  As your Pastor, I am thankful, proud, and delighted with the progress that has been made. And I get the sense that in the ways that Christ has made us new, we are willing to do a new thing.  Physically and spiritually we are sharing and demonstrating the power of resurrection!  That is the power that changes one soul at a time until all creation rejoices.
As the church building has been turned inside out, in many ways, so has life at the parsonage. Sandy, J.P. and I are blessed by the support not only of the Jerome and Filer congregations, but also by neighboring congregations who are praying for us.  Life in the parsonage has been changed physically and emotionally with the addition (since February 7th) of 4 ½ year old Lamar, 3 ½ year old Trista, and Dakota who will celebrate her first birthday on April 9th.  We are thankful for thoughtful words of concern and encouragement as well as the generous gifts you have brought.
There are radical changes for these three youngsters as well.  This is the first time this sibling group has been placed in the same home. We take comfort that they are together in a loving, stable, and safe home during this time.  As of March 26th the Judge issued an order for the efforts of reunification to cease and for a permanency plan to be developed.  There will be another hearing around the end of June to make further determinations about their future.
Even though this relationship is tentative, it has brought deep changes to all of us in the parsonage, our neighbors and to our church families.  I have discovered that I can change diapers but that I still cannot conscientiously feed a baby rice cereal.  I realize that with one child, I always know who did it; with four, I am clueless like the majority of parents.  I have laughed and I have cried.  I have been stretched and challenged as well as frustrated and awakened.  I have spoken when I should have listened---and it amazes even me, that I have been speechless. I have been delighted as Dakota took her first steps in the living room of the parsonage.  I have been thankful that these children who have been moved and shuffled, who came to us with the clothes on their back and were surrounded by horror, violence, neglect, and abuse, rest so comfortably and sleep so peacefully.
I have spent many words just to say this: we find ourselves surrounded by the sounds and energies of new life and resurrection.  By the power and grace of God, our souls are filled with sacred experiences.    Easter is for all creation.  I pray that each of you will be saturated by the power and grace of resurrection, that all creation may rejoice in the gift of God in Christ our Savior!

Grace and Peace,

  Good and Faithful Servants
This month we have good and faithful servants who are familiar to everyone in our church. While everyone knows Bill and Charlotte Merritt, maybe there are some things that you will enjoy learning because they are too modest to tell you.
Charlotte was born in Marsing, and was baptized in the Free Methodist Church. After high school, she studied micro biology at Idaho State University, where she met Bill. He was born in Beaumont, Texas, and grew up in Victorville, California. After his four year stint in the Navy he came to Idaho State in Pocatello to study engineering, swept Charlotte off her feet, and they were married in 1966.
Bill finished his civil engineering degree in bridge design, with Charlotte working full time to help put him through the University of New Mexico. The Idaho Transportation Department seized Bill to design the Perrine Bridge, and he came to Twin Falls as project engineer. Desiring to live in a small town, they made their home here in Jerome.
The Merritts have two children, Billy and Susan, and four grandchildren, 9, 6, 5 and 2 years of age. Billy and Michele live in Twin Falls and Susan and Jason reside in Eagle.' They take advantage of every opportunity to baby sit for those mighty fine grandchildren!
Bill and Charlotte have been active in every area of church work. They have both taught Sunday school, and have been camp counselors and youth leaders with fond memories of trips with the youth to Redfish Lake. They can say they've had a hand in shaping the lives of many of our youth, several of whom have gone into the ministry. They both worked with Scout Packs and Troops. Bill has been Chairman of the Administrative Board, PPR, Trustees, and for twenty-five years he has been on the Sawtooth Campsite Committee.
Bill helped design and build the beautiful Sawtooth Lodge. Charlotte says she has her name on many of the logs, and even helped straighten that road into the site. Every Fall for years the Merritts and many couples from our church went up to build the cabins and make improvements in the area. The LaRue, Bitterli, Ruby, Hargraves families, and Rev. Ray Wright, and Betty Hall, as cook, all worked tirelessly to complete work in the Fall to winterize the camp. Staying late to finish projects, they fashioned garbage bag raincoats on their children by poking holes for arms and heads. The kids have great memories, too!
Charlotte served as church secretary and UMW president. She has sung or directed the choir for 25 years, and next week she is attending Music Camp in Magruder for the fourth year. They have been active in Emmaus, with Charlotte just completing three years on the Board. The CERTS and Outreach Programs, which provide Christian education for high school students, are supported by the Merritts. For the past sixteen years she has worked at the South Central District Health as office services supervisor. This valuable community program involves immunizations, family planning, children's health, refugee, AIDS patients, and breast cancer agendas.
Bill is looking forward to retiring from the State Highway Transportation Department this year, after thirty-two years of service. Every time we cross the Perrine Bridge we should appreciate anew the beautiful structure that spans the Snake River Canyon, a marvelous feat, and then thank Bill for his God-given talent in bridge design! In other areas he is becoming more involved with the youth accountability board, working with juveniles at the Court House. What a great role model for our young people!
Our church is so fortunate to have had Bill and Charlotte live here. "The Church is our home. I grew up in a community where everything was centered around the church." As one visits in their home, one notices the Bible on the table where daily devotions are evident. Charlotte loves to read Paul's writings, especially Ephesians 3:20: Now glory be to God who by his mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of-infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts or hopes. The Merritts are our Good and Faithful Servants this month, and we are blessed and grateful to have this talented couple in our midst.

 It’s Not Too Early!
Joleen McCandless has volunteered to Coordinate our Jerome County Fair Spud Booth this year.  She wants every member of the church family to mark their calendars for the dates July 24-29, 2001.   She is letting us know this so that we will be more intentional this year about our commitment to work together in this fund raising effort and also be more prepared and organized this year.

It’s Not Too Early Part II
Come and help make items for Craft Fairs to be held this Fall.  We will be meeting once a month from now until September, beginning this Saturday, April 7th at the church from 10:00am-2:00pm.  Instructions for items to be made will be given each month in the newsletter and then we will all gather at the church and work together in fellowship.
Proceeds from the sale of these Crafts will benefit the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund.  For more information, please contact Claire McClure at 324-2022.
