UNITED METHODIST HISTORY

Methodism is a comparatively young denomination dating back to 1738. John Wesley, it's founder was a minister in the Church of England. Small groups, or societies, were organized for Bible study and worship experiences to enable each individual to grow in God's grace. These societies were called "Methodists" because of their methodical approach to discipline, study and service. The Methodist Church in the United States was established in Baltimore in 1784. In 1968 the Methodist Church joined the United Brethern and became the United Methodist Church.

Jefferson United Methodist Church History

The Jefferson United Methodist Church was actually formed by a few members from the Fork Creek Methodist Church around the turn of the century. The Fork Creek location is only about 2 miles from Jefferson,SC but in the late 1890's (horse & buggy days) that was quite a lot of inconvenience.

1885 Mr & Mrs J.A.McMillian, Fork Creek members, invited others to their home and organized the Jefferson "Town" Methodists. For eight years, the small band worshipped there, but in

1903 they built the first Jefferson Methodist Church just north of the present Methodist parsonage. The wooden church was used for nineteen years and then sold to Mt. Canaan Baptist Church. During the following years, the group prospered and in

1922, the present Jefferson United Methodist Church was erected under the direction of Rev. J.A. Jerman, who also laid much of the brick. The land was donated by active church members, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Baker, affectionately called Uncle Sandy and Aunt Laura.

In 1997, sensing a new spiritual fervor, and seeing much numerical growth, a needed annex was built which included 7 classrooms, fellowship hall/kitchen, choir room, and new restrooms. Building chairman, Gerald Funderburk, Robert Raley, finance chairman, and building contractor, Donald Plyler, a member of the Fork Creek United Methodist Church, worked together to bring us to the dedication of a beautiful new addition in November.

2005 The members are looking forward to continued growth and service to our Lord Jesus Christ, led by Pastor John Bolin, and his wife, Amy. The church goal is for its members to walk more closely with our Master, to become more like Him, and to share Him with everyone,  in everyplace,  at anytime.

Above pictured (Lib McMillan, the late Thelma Hartman Summers, and Anna McMillan Evans) are the three oldest members of the Jefferson UMC. Their ancestry goes back to the founding fathers of Methodism here in Jefferson. When they sing 'Faith of Our Fathers", they really are living it!
