135th Year Celebration for the United Methodist Women

The United Methodist Women will be celebrating the 135th year of the organization of Methodist Women. The celebration will be held in conjunction with the UMW Annual meeting which will be held at the Chariton United Methodist Church on September 11th. Anyone wishing to attend should contact UMW President Arlene Shaw for reservation information.


United Methodist Women

Our purpose

The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. (The Book of Discipline, 1984, paragraph 262.5)

Five Star Unit

Stuart-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Women is a Five Star Unit for contributing to all five channels of undesignated giving: pledge to missions, gifts in memory, gifts in honor, special mission recognition pins, and World Thank Offering.

Who are United Methodist Women?

United Methodist Women is a group of women in each congregation organized for mission. Women like you. Women of diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, employed, not employed, housewives, businesswomen, single, married, divorced, young, middle-aged and older women. We are women committed to mission.

Why join United Methodist Women?

Women join United Methodist Women to grow spiritually, educationally and intellectually, to be stimulated, to gain leadership experience, to meet other women and to be involved in mission in a number of ways. These include participation in:

  • Spiritual growth studies and renewal
  • Mission education
  • Biblical and theological study
  • Women in Crisis programs
  • Child advocacy
  • Giving on behalf of persons in mission

How does one become a member of United Methodist Women?

One becomes a member by expressing a desire to belong and to participate in the global mission of the church through United Methodist Women. Membership can be expressed in one or more of the following ways:
  • Attendance at meetings
  • Undesignated giving to support global mission
  • Intercessory prayer
  • Meaningful community involvement
  • Participation in varied events, projects, issues and concerns of the women's program division
  • Accepting leadership responsibility
United Methodist Women is a community of women who nurture and encourage one another in their spiritual growth and development. You are invited to become a part of this supportive community.
