Community Ministries
BICNoM is one of the ways that Immanuel reaches out in service to others. In cooperation with three other area United Methodist congregations (Brookfield, Christ and Nottingham-Myers), our congregation gives of itself both financially and through participation in important projects such as Reconstruction Missions to the Gulf Coast in the wake of Katrina, and working locally through Christmas In April to help our immediate neighbors.
Over a decade ago, under the leadership of pastors Earl Mason and Evan Young, our congregations started to worship together on Ash Wednesday, during Holy Week, and on Thanksgiving Eve, A few years later, with the support of choir directors Sandy Cross and Lenard Starks, members of our choirs began to sing together as the Unity Choir.
Next, in August 2005, hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. BICNoM was created later that fall as our loose-knit community of churches began to work together in cooperative ministry efforts. Pastor Hunt invited laity from St. Matthews UMC in Bowie to introduce us to UMVIM (United Methodist Volunteers in Mission). Subsequently, Eldon Baldwin became a trained UMVIM leader. As part of that training, he joined a St. Matthews team in April 2006, and travelled to Mississippi for a week of relief and reconstruction work in Pascagoula.

Since July 2007, Eldon has organized and lead UMVIM teams, composed mainly of BICNoM volunteers, to New Orleans and the area around Biloxi, MS. These pictures were taken by various members of our 2008 team.
Eighteen (18) volunteers departed on Saturday, January 5, 2008, for the 2-day drive to Biloxi. They spent Saturday night in a motel outside Atlanta, GA, and by Sunday night they were comfortably settled in a UMVIM dormitory provided their host church, Heritage UMC in d’Iberville, MS. The host church provided cooking, eating, sleeping facilities for three teams that week: BICNoM, a second Maryland team from Davidsonville UMC, and a third team from Champaign, IL.

2009 Katrina Trip to New Orleans, Mississippi
Hi Everyone - Here a few of OJ's pictures from the trip. Our work is being coordinated out of the People's Community Center, a church that has been returned to service since it was closed by Katrina. The blue house is one of two we started working on today. VIC took the shot of OJ standing by the kitchen cabinets they installed together this afternoon. During our sharing time this evening we took photos of the fund-raiser t-shirts that Jim inspired. There were several testimonies to the fact that this fund really worked, and enabled several on the team to afford the trip this year. - Eldon
