AUCTION     -      YARD  SALE       -       DINNER

At the Annual Charge Conference, we were told about Habitat for Humanity. The Conference is planning on building a house in Suffolk County. They asked all churches to try and raise some money toward this.

On May 17th, raindate May 31st, we will have a huge yard sale beginning at 10:00AM.   In the afternoon there will be an auction of items that are not part of the yard sale. Viewing begins at 10:00AM, auction begins at 11:00AM.   That evening we will hold a delicious dinner beginning at 6:00PM. Tickets for the dinner are $15.00 adults/ $6 children 12 and under.

Again, all money goes to Habitat for Humanity.

To accomplish this, we will need the cooperation of the whole church.  We need many volunteers to set up, break down, work the yard sale, auction. This is a great opportunity for  everyone to come together as a church family to work on this project.  Please sign up in Fellowship Hall so we know how many we can expect. The more people we have, the more organized we will be and some may not have to stay all day!!

Mark down this date now so nothing will interfere.  Sign up in Fellowship Hall so we know who and how many to expect to help.  Empty your closets and attics and donate all those things you don’t use and your children do not want. If any questions, see me.

                                                                                                                                        Jan Corwin

On Sunday, May 4th, we will have a quick meeting after church for all volunteers for the Auction/Yard Sale. We want to have everyone understand what needs to be done.

On Thursday, May 15th, at 6pm, we are asking people to come and set up tables and carry boxes to Fellowship Hall. That way on Friday during the day we can get everything set up for the auction.

Saturday at 8:30am we will set up the yard sale. This is going to involve a lot of volunteer time. We want to show all the churches what the Islip United Methodist Church is all about.

Thanks for all your cooperation.

Jan Corwin

TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW FOR THE MAY 17TH DINNER. PURCHASE THROUGH THE CHURCH OFFICE, THRIFT SHOP OR SEE JAN CORWIN.

CRAFT FAIR/FLEA MARKET UPDATE

                      4) Have you done something especially nice for someone?

PEACE WITH JUSTICE SUNDAY

May 18, 2008

Special Offering

Pentecost celebrates the outpouring of the Holy Spirit calling for God’s shalom. Peace with Justice witnesses to God’s demand for a faithful, just, disarmed, and secure world.

The 1980 General Conference created a church wide Peace with Justice program assigned to the General Board of Church and Society. By 1984, volunteer coordinators were recruited in many annual conferences, and peace with justice ministries had sprung up throughout the church. The 1984 General Conference voted to support the program with an annual Special Sunday offering on World Order Sunday, established half a century ago to build recognition and support for the work of the United Nations. While World Order Sunday was set traditionally in October, churches were encouraged to observe it any time during the season of Pentecost to avoid a conflict with World Communion Sunday, also in October.

The 1988 General Conference established Peace with Justice Sunday as the first Sunday after Pentecost to give churches a single, more convenient date for the offering and a name that clearly identifies the ministries it supports.

The annual conference keeps 50 percent of the receipts for Peace with Justice ministries in the conference. The conference board of church and society or an equivalent structure administers these funds. The remaining 50 percent is used for Peace with Justice ministries related to the General Board of Church and Society.

 2001 - $245,427 (average 3 cents per member)

2002   $243,051 (average 3 cents per member)

2003  - $267,589 (average 3.2 cents per member)

Remember: $1. per member per Special Sunday offering makes a big difference! Please give.

“Live in Peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.” 2 Corinthians 13:11 NRSV

To Pastor Doug and the Congregation,

Thank you so much for the beautiful plant that was sent to me. It brightens up each and every day as I recuperated from the surgery. Thank you, also, for the many, many cards. And, of course, thank you all for the many, many prayers. What would I do without such a wonderful, caring bunch of people.

Thank you to Pastor Doug for visiting me in the hospital! He really lifted my spirits that day.

God bless you all.
