Peace is the business of people of faith, even after war breaks out.
Here or abroad a voice must be heard about the conduct of war,
picking up the pieces, and challenging domination with a community of shalom is our vocation.
We offer these ideas resources and links as congregations
engage in peacemaking to prevent war, when hostilities begin,
and in the healing aftermath as long as it may be.
There needs to be a timeline for peace, so leaders and congregations
are urged to begin now in planning the response of the faithful community.
  A Franciscan Benediction
May God bless you with Discomfort...
at Easy Answers, Half-Truths, and Superficial Relationships,
so that you may live Deep Within Your Heart.
May God bless you with Anger...
at Injustice, Oppression, and Exploitation of People,
so that you may work for Justice, Freedom, and Peace.
May God bless you with Tears...
to shed for those who suffer from Pain, Rejection,
Starvation, and War,
So that You may reach out Your Hand to Comfort them
and to turn their Pain into Joy.
And may God bless you with enough foolishness...
to Believe that You can Make a Difference in this World,
so that You can DO
what others claim cannot be Done.

Pray for victims of terrorism and for Shalom that includes just solutions, and peace

What happened Sept. 11 was an evil terror. Muslims, Jews and Christians have prayed together with and in grief for the victims of terror, and proclaim the salaam, shalom, peace, that is central to each faith. As Christians and fellow children of God standing against violence to innocent people, we reject the cycle of violence that fear and vengeance engenders. We also reject bigotry or harassment being done to innocent people. We are concerned that war most often perpetuates the very evils it purports to eradicate.

FAITH EMERGENCY RESPONSE TO IRAQ WAR - HOLY LAND -- and UNILATERAL FOREIGN POLICY

Sen. Bob Kerrey op-ed in the New York Times, April 11, 2004 is worth reading. http://www.truthout.org/docs_04/041304B.shtml
Declaring this a war on terror (terror being a tactic, not geopolitical) means there is no way to define when it is over.

Several selections point up that the Peace Movement needs to deal with the "go it alone" new American defense and foreign policy. This new strategy, supposedly necessitated by a terrorist world, is a major departure from the American and International norms. Discern!

Discern! "Because as people of faith and leaders of diverse religious communities, we recognize that we are at a moment of choice even more urgent than before the war in Iraq began" The Domestic Interfaith Summit on April 29-30 issued an "Urgent Call" and "Words of Reflection. Acknowledging that there are competing visions of how peace should be pursued, the meeting was co-called by the National Council of Churches USA, Islamic Society of North America and Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. Iraq and the Arabs' Future Fouad Ajami From Foreign Affairs, January/February 2003   Summary: The driving motivation behind a new U.S. endeavor in Iraq should be modernizing the Arab world. Most Arabs will see such an expedition as an imperial reach into their world. But in this case a reforming foreign power's guidelines offer a better way than the region's age-old prohibitions, defects, and phobias. No apologies ought to be made for America's "unilateralism." Christian positions on war (according to Roland Bainton's typology Theology Today review) have historically been of three types: 1. Crusade, 2. Just War guidelines 3. Pacifism. Each draws upon scriptural bases. Islamic position on war is also nuanced. United Methodist teachings are listed in the Discipline, Social Principles and General Conference Resolutions. Differing perspectives are seen among the following three books: The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order (Simon Schuster 1996) by Samuel P. Huntington. What Went Wrong? Western Impact and Middle Eastern Response Oxford 2000 by Bernard Lewis. The Karen Armstrong book (Ballantine 2000) The Battle for God (she also has a monograph on Islam) explores the fundamentalist movements within Christianity, Judaism and Islam with insights that are important in the current situation.

We can supply ten or more copies to each parish for only $10 a book with a study guide for leaders.
