Worship and Music Committee

The committee is responsible for supporting the Pastor and Director of Music in preparing and conducting the worship service. Specific areas include scheduling acolytes, presenters for the children's sermon, providing communion elements, scheduling liturgists, greeters, and ushers, and seasonal decoration of the sanctuary. The committee typically meets every other month, with meetings following the 10:30 a.m. worship service.

The second Sunday of September marked the one year anniversary of the 8:30 a.m. Hallelujah Worship Service. The Hallelujah Worship Service is a less formal worship using a four member musician group with guitar, bass, marimba and drums. The musician group was recruited and organized by Director of Music Heather Blades. World music, non traditional musical instruments, liturgical dance, and contemporary hymns are used, and we are encouraged by the support the congregation has given to this new service. Attendance during the first year has typically been 25 to 40 people.

A Time and Talent Celebration worship service was conducted in September 2002 to solicit information on individual interest in the various service and committee opportunities within the church. The service was scheduled to support the work of the Committee on Lay Leadership.

The Worship and Music Committee has emphasized involvement of members of the congregation in the worship service. Youth and parents, and adult members are encouraged to serve as acolytes to commemorate birthdays and special events. Liturgists, communion servers, sharing of joys and concerns, children’s sermons, greeters, ushering and Returning Thanks in the Hallelujah Worship Service provide additional opportunities for active participation in the worship service. Broadening the base of participants in both worship services is a continuing objective.

During 2002 the committee continued audio recording of the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service. The audio cassettes are available from the church office to shut-ins or others who want to listen to a service that they missed.

The committee expresses its gratitude to guest ministers Reverend Ira DeSpain, Reverend Steve Hughes, IHUMC member Bob Douglass, and to our Youth Director and student minister Donabel Martin for leading Sunday services during the course of this year.
