Thank you for visiting our Missions page.

Methodism’s founder John Wesley said, "I look upon all the world as my parish." Wesley reminded us that we are called to step out of our little corner of the world to spread the good news, transform hopelessness into hope and help God’s children wherever they may be. "I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me." --Matthew 25:35-36, NRSV

Your contributions to your local church not only benefit your local congregation, but also have regional, national and international impact through our connectional giving system.   We invite you to worship with us on Sunday.   All are welcome.

Soup Kitchen

The Bristol Lodge operates a soup kitchen at the church.   Hours of operation are 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm, seven days a week.
Bristol Lodge Volunteers

Bristol Lodge is an established soup kitchen that serves from 40 to 80 people each evening.   About half of the clients served are residents of the Bristol Lodge shelter and the rest are people from the community.   There are no requirements for using the soup kitchen and no registration is needed.   In more than eleven years the cooks and servers have ranged from the very young to the elderly.   On many months a mix of volunteers fill the need, at other times the youth group, a scout troop, a church class, or a family steps in.

Dick Rogers has been a driving force in the Soup Kitchen since it came to Immanuel.   On Thursday, January 20th, 2005 Dick Rogers was featured on the front page of the Waltham Daily News Tribune.  He was honored for his work at the Bristol Lodge Soup kitchen.   He was also honored by the Boston Celtics at the Fleet Center on December 22, 2005.

The Minks

Immanuel helps support the Minks, a family of missionaries working in Namibia, Africa.   The Minks run a children's home for fifty children whose parents have died from HIV/AIDS. They run a feeding Center for orphans who have a guardian to look after them, but no food.

This home is for orphans who have lost their parents in Africa from H.I.V.A. Gary and Rebecca Mink and their workers have been doing wonderful work with these children.   They are in need of funds to keep this home going.   Therefore, if you are able to send a contribution to help, it will be much appreciated.   Please send your contribution to: Immanuel U.M. Church, Attn: Missions Committee at 545 Moody St., Waltham, MA 02453 and it will be sent to the Children of Zion, Inc. for their home in Namibia, Africa.

If you would like to more about The Children of Zion Vilage, we suggest you visit the website or watch a Video.

Food Pantry

Immanuel runs a food pantry for those in need.   Food is distributed on Wednesdays only, from 9:00 a.m, to 11:00 a.m.   This is a year-round mission.   The church accepts non-perishable items, such as pasta, cereal, beans, canned goods, etc.   We thank you for your support of this increasingly needed mission.

Heifer International

If you have been in church on Heifer Sunday, you have seen The Chicken. It's not a live chicken, but it is meant to represent the farm animals purchased by Heifer International. Your dollars, along with that of other churches can make a difference.

A Heifer Spells Hope.   To a young woman in eastern Kenya, a good dairy cow is an unimaginable prize.   It can double her family's income within a year.   That means she is able to pay fees for school and the required uniform. Like Heifer International families all over the world, her family carefully protects their cow in an airy shelter safe from predators and accidents.   They don't let their heifer wander with local cattle.   They grow elephant grass to cut and carry to her.   Their reward for the extra work? Ten times more milk than their neighbors' cows give!  And the joy of knowing they can help another family when the time comes to pass on one of their gift animal's offspring to someone else who needs a sustainable resource for food and income.

Heifer works locally, as well as internationally.   Located in beautiful rural Massachusetts, Overlook Farm is a 270-acre working farm that educates the public about world hunger, poverty and solutions.   More than 20,000 visitors come to Overlook each year to participate in tours, service learning groups, educational programs, or to attend special events.   Overlook is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for visitors to take self-guided tours, watch a video, visit the gift shop, picnic, etc.   To learn more go to Overlook farm.

Got Books?

Thank you for your support of this valuable mission. During this time of worries about global warming, it is nice to be able help save the planet by reusing the resources we already have.  As stewards of this world it is important to do what we can to help.

The Immanuel United Methodist church in partnership with Got Books? has an ongoing fundraising campaign to collect books, videos, DVDS, CD, audio books, records/lps, sheet music, sports memorabilia. sports cards, comic books, computer software, and video games.   These items will be reused instead of thrown away.   Donating items, as well as letting your neighbors, friends and family know about this campaign is one way you can support the ministries of the church.   Please deposit your donations, items listed above, in the container located inside the fence on the Cherry St. side of the church.   Please spread the word,"Got Books?"
