This is the United Methodist Committee on Relief Hotline for Friday, April 20, 2001.

UMCOR is supporting the efforts of the Methodist Church in El Salvador to build 500 houses for earthquake survivors.  The plans for the new houses have been provided by ACT (Action by Churches Together). The homes will be earthquake resistant, equipped with water and electricity, and will have two bedrooms, a kitchen and a combined living/dining area. Each house will cost $3,000. Both volunteers and funds are needed for this response.  UMCOR has received enough financial support to build 50 homes, and your gifts are urgently needed in order to build all 500 houses.  Please give to Advance #511447-8, "El Salvador Earthquake".  To find out more about volunteering, call the Volunteer Line at (800) 918-3100.

It is too soon to know the extent of the damage from flooding in the Upper Midwest and along the Mississippi River. UMCOR has been in communication with several annual conference disaster coordinators, and when needs have been assessed and requests for assistance have been received, we will post that information in the Hotline.  There is an urgent need for volunteers to help with recovery from the tornadoes and other severe storms that struck Mississippi earlier this year.  Skilled and non-skilled volunteers are needed for debris removal, roofing, electrical work, carpentry, painting and general repairs.  Please call the Volunteer Line at (800) 918-3100 for more information.  Your continued support of UMCOR's Domestic Disaster Response, Advance #901670-1 will help people recover from this year's storms and floods.

UMCOR has sent grants to provide ongoing famine relief in Sudan, Kenya, and Eritrea.  Famine in many parts of Africa continues to be a critical need, and your support will be needed for many months, or years to come.  You can help provide immediate food assistance and agricultural support by giving to Advance #101250-4, "Africa Famine Relief".

Gifts may be made through local United Methodist Churches, or by calling (800) 554-8583.  Credit card donations are accepted.

UMCOR is providing emergency relief in many areas at this moment, including: Afghanistan, Angola,  the Democratic Republic of Congo, El Salvador, Eritrea, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Kosovo, Mozambique, the Middle East, the Philippines, Serbia, Sudan, the United States and many other parts of the globe.  For more information on these and other UMCOR ministries, please visit the website:

Please pray for those who suffer from hunger, poverty, natural and human-made disasters.

URGENT NEEDS

Supplies needed for Midwest flood victims

By Paul W. Widicus*

Flood waters are inundating large areas of the northern part of the North
Central Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. An urgent call is going
out for supplies and volunteers.
Waters are on the rise along the Red River causing much suffering and
concern in the Dakotas and western Minnesota. Near record water levels also
are being forecast for the upper Mississippi River resulting in flooding in
eastern Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa.
The Midwest Mission Distribution Center located near Springfield, Illinois
has been placed on 24 hour a day alert with volunteers collecting, sorting,
packing and shipping supplies to the effected areas. This facility works in
cooperation with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and with
the Annual (regional) conferences in the North Central Jurisdiction and the
Midwest to relieve suffering by providing material resources to the victims
of disasters world-wide.
Health Kits and Flood Buckets are needed now! Supplies are already reduced
by other disasters in other areas of the world this winter. Please ask local
churches and members to collect items for the kits. Assemble the kits or box
up the supplies and bring or send them to the Distribution Center near
Springfield as soon as possible. Please follow the contents list for Health
Kits and Flood Buckets exactly (list of contents is attached).
Other items like pumps, wet vacuums, generators, etc. are also needed.
Please contact the Distribution Center about specifications on these items.
Volunteers are needed at the Distribution Center to prepare and load the
items for shipment. Others will be needed to deliver and unload the supplies
in the areas where needed.
For information contact the Midwest Mission Distribution Center, 1022 New
City Road, Chatham, IL 62629, phone 217-483-7911, Fax 217-483-7981, e-mail
midwestdc@aol.com.
Volunteers wishing to work in the disaster areas are asked to call the UMCOR
Hotline at 1-800-841-1235 or the Conference Disaster Team in the area.
As more information becomes available about needs for supplies and
volunteers it will be provided. Please join other United Methodists and
people of all faiths in praying for and caring for the victims of this
latest disaster to strike the upper Midwest.
