REBECCA JANE WRIGHT GRIFFITH

"Mom" Griffith or Becky, as her family and friends affectionately knew her, was born Rebecca Jane Wright on October 11, 1889 to Jennie I and Howard Wright, in the Toll House I Addison, Pa. She and her four sisters and four (4) brothers were raised in Addison.

In 1916 she became the bride of Charles Victor Griffith. There were seven (7) children born into the Charles and Rebecca Griffith family. They were the proud parents five (5) daughters and two (2) sons:

Maxine White, Nancy, Dorothy Crawford and Mary Lou (Mitzie) Grimm all of of Hopwood and Helen Blough of Canfield Ohio; two sons, Glenn of Alexandria, Virginia and Dane of Uniontown, both now deceased. Victor Griffith died of cancer in 193.0 shortly after the family moved to Hopwood from Somerfield, Pa. Seeking and finding comfort in the Hopwood Methodist Church, Becky became, the teacher of the Arthilla Devan Class in 1931 and remained in t-hat capacity for 27 years. The Arthilla Devan Class was a fun-loving group of about 45 women that were as "famous" for their Halloween Parties as they were for their chicken dinners.

In 1957 as a tribute to her devotion to her family and the church, Mom was honored by the Arthilla Devan Class in a Hopwood version of the then popular TV show "This Is Your Life" which was shared by class members, friends and family.

With her two sons overseas in World War II she became active in the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and became involved to in their many causes. She met with other women of the Hopwood area and they made bandages and lap robes.

Mom's love, besides her grandchildren-was her flowers, especially her red climbing roses.  When not in her flower garden her second hobby was braiding rugs.  One of which is on display in the Addison Toll House where she was born.

Mom was a wonderful neighbor to those around her and was loved by all. She was also very well known for her, delicious potato soup. If she knew someone was not feeling well she would call and say I made some potato soup for you, come out back and get it.

Mom never knew a stranger. She enriched the lives of all who knew her. Mom's personality was a legacy to her children.  Mom died on September 4, 1976 at the age of 87 and is buried beside her husband in the Addison Cemetery.  She is survived by five (5) daughters, thirteen (13) grandchildren and twelve (12) great grand- children.
