GERALD C. WHITE
MAXINE GRIFFITH WHITE
Gerald was born on July 11, 1911 to Elizabeth and Charles White. He had two (2) sisters, Irene and Viola who were also lifelong residents of Hopwood. Gerald went to North Union High School and graduated in 1929.
Maxine was
born on January 22, 1917 to Rebecca and Charles Victor Griffith She was born in
Confluence, Pa. and was the oldest of seven (7) children. The Griffith family
moved to Hopwood in 1927. Maxine was a 1934 graduate South Union High School.
Gerald and
Maxine were married on October 19, 1935. They had a son, 'Charles Ronald in
1937, and a daughter, Rebecca Jane, in 1952. Their marriage, for better or for
worse, for richer or for poorer, scanned fifty (50) wonderful years and on
October 19, 1985, along with many loved ones and friends, they celebrated their
Golden Wedding Anniversary.
Gerald and
Maxine became part of the family of the Hopwood Methodist Church in the early 1950's.
Maxine was a teacher in the Elementary Class and served on various committees
throughout the years. Gerald was a teacher for the Junior@-Senior High class, a
member of the Board of Trustees, and held a very important seat in the Church
Choir. On many occasions, he gave Martha a hard time about this song or that,
but the ones he complained about always seemed to be the ones he sang best!
Gerald was always ready to help a friend or even a stranger. He had a kind word for everyone and, as every child in Hopwood knows, he always had chewing gum in his pocket. He had a very special love of children, especially his two (2) grandchildren, Charlie and Melissa.
Gerald left
an indelible mark in Hopwood and the Hopwood United Methodist Church. He was
called to be with our Lord on June 19, 1986.
Maxine is still a very active and supportive member of the community and
the church and is well known these days for her famous "Potato
Casserole".
