Lena M. (Michener) Peck was born in Uniontown, Pa. on Sept. 5, 1902. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Myrtle Michener. Lena had two brothers, David Roy Michener who died June 23, 1977 and Elmer Charles Michener, who resides on Buttermilk Lane in Hopwood.
Lena grew up on Mill Street in Uniontown and attended Uniontown
High School. She worked for the Bell Telephone Company as a switchboard
operator and worked at French Cleaners in Hopwood.
Lena became a member of the Hopwood United Methodist Church in
1924 and was very much involved in the work of the church. Lena loved serving
the Lord. She was a Sunday School teacher, member of the Women’s Missionary
Society, and served as the church pianist from 1924 until her illness in 1984.
She also enjoyed the fellowship with the Women's Dartball Team and the
Friendship Sewing Club of Hopwood.
In 1984 Lena received a Certificate of Appreciation from the
Hopwood United Methodist Church for Age Level Coordinator and Church Pianist.
While living on Mill Street in Uniontown, Lena became the
sweetheart of
Doyle L. Peck. Their houses were separated by railroad tracks.
They literally came from opposite sides of the tracks. Lena and Doyle were
married September 22, 1921 in Uniontown, Pa. by Rev. Carlyle, pastor of the
Methodist Protestant Church.
The couple had three (3) children. Norma Peck died at
childbirth. Two living children, Roberta E. Batcho, who lives in Smithfield, Pa
and Franklin D. Peck of Punxsutawney, Pa. There are six grandchildren, and
eight great grand- children ranging in ages from eleven months to seventeen
years of age.
Lena and Doyle lived in Uniontown when they were first married
and then moved to Buttermilk Lane, Hopwood, Pa. where Doyle resides at the
present time.
Lena went to be with
the Lord on June 1, 1986.
DOYLE L. PECK
Doyle L. Peck was born April 1, 1897, in Coletown, Ohio. He was
the son of the late Algy Ray and Mary Belle Peck.
Doyle has one sister, Evelyne Garden who is living in
Phoenix, Arizona in a nursing home. He
had one brother, David Emerson Peck, who died September 3, 1961 in Hagerstown,
Md. Doyle has many nieces and nephews living around the Hagerstown, Md. area.
Doyle served in World War I as a Marine, in Company Eighty Four,
Fifth Marines Second Division. He joined the Marines after he graduated from
Uniontown High School in 1917. He was in France and later with the Occupational
Forces in Germany until discharged.
During his lifetime
Doyle was employed as a mechanic for Stepp and Smiley in Uniontown, and as a
battery man for Jim Fearer. He was Rural Route carrier for the Hopwood Post
Office from 1952 to 1965, for 13 years, until his retirement at age 68.
In 1984 Doyle received
a Certificate of Appreciation from the Hopwood United Methodist Church for
serving as a Member at Large of the Administrative Council. Doyle was also a
very important par-t of the Men's Dartball Team.
On April 20, 1985 Doyle received a Certificate of Appreciation
from the Hopwood Vol. Fire Dept. Doyle is an Honor Roll Member and served as
First Lieutenant for one year, Vice President for two years and Treasurer for
11 years.
During his childhood Doyle lived on Mill Street in Uniontown.
Doyle Peck and Lena Michener were youngsters growing up together on Mill
Street, their houses being separated by the railroad tracks. Doyle and Lena
were married Sept. 22, 1921.
Doyle and Lena celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary at
their home on Buttermilk Lane in Hopwood. They celebrated their 60th Wedding
Anniversary at the home of their daughter with an Open House, Sept. 1981. They
celebrated their 64th Anniversary at home together.
Lena went to be with Lord June 1, 1986. Doyle, at the age of 94
is still residing at his home on Buttermilk Lane.
