INDUCTION
William Franklin
Michener and Myrtle Belle Stewart Michener gave birth on April 19, 1906
to a son whom they named Elmer Charles. He was the youngest of three
children, two boys and one girl.
Elmer received his education in Uniontown, graduating from the
Uniontown High School in 1924.
In his youth he played
a saxophone in a band. Elmer joined the Hopwood Methodist Church November 22, 1936. He
served as a Trustee for a number of years. He
loved gardening and raising
vegetables.
When he retired from
work he always said he retired but
not from gardening. Elmer’s occupations included laborer, garage
work and battery repair and maintenance
supervisor for the Laurel Highlands Schools.
He was also an honor
roll member of the Hopwood Volunteer
Fire Department.
Kathryn M. Hilling Michener was the oldest of two children born
to Abner King Hilling and Sarah Margaret Hilling, big
sister of George Hilling. She was born
December 3, 1909.
Kathryn joined the
Hopwood Methodist Church December 22,1935.
She was a devoted member of the church
choir,
She worked as a
telephone company operator and also for French Cleaners at their Hopwood location.
Elmer C. Michener and
Kathryn M. Hilling were married-on June 1,1926 in-Oakland, Maryland
and resided on Buttermilk Lane in Hopwood from1927 until the time of their death. Elmer passed away
August 18, 1993 and Kathryn on July 31, 1996. They were the proud parents of three (3) daughters Janet M.
Wendell, Jean M. Mt. Joy, and Elma K. Hartzel (now deceased). They had nine (9)
grandchildren, sixteen (16) great grandchildren and one great- great grandchild.
