George A. Semans, Sr. was born in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania on December 31, 1911 to George Elias Law Semans and Anna Marie
Semans. He was the oldest of four (4)
children. His siblings are Charles
Milbert Semans, Earnest Ray Semans, and Martha Marie Semans. George was a retired employee of the Hagan
Ice Cream Company. He married Ivie
Elizabeth Provance. To this marriage
was born two (2) children - George Albert Semans, Jr., and Elizabeth Ann
Hallum. George was the proud
grandfather of Kimberly Ann Sturgeon and Seth Thomas Sturgeon.
In 1917 a young boy came to Hopwood United Methodist Church. Through his years many met a character of wise innocence coupled with a mind 6ut of mischief; a combination found in George A. Semans. Sr. His heart was one of gold and gleamed brightly with God’s unselfish love. His service to the church was constants. A choir bass could be heard each Sunday morning, and decorations were always sure to be present for the sweet celebrations of the believers. Growing up, I can never remember an occasion when my grandfather did not have a gift for my brother and me, nor was there ever a moment when he did not have time to spend with us. Upon his passing, I received his Bible and the devotional book he had been reading. Although there were not many markings or personal notes anywhere, I did notice one thing. Each time the Lord’s Prayer had been printed in the book it was underlined. A strong, gentle hand had highlighted each familiar word. He must have prayed it often.
