The Bells of Hope
In September of 1990 a new ministry of Hope U.M. Church of Ephrata became a reality. In the spring of that year, Rev. Barry Wolfe had a vision to begin a handbell choir. A new church member, Maggie Collogan spearheaded a fundraising effort to acquire the three octave set of Schulmerich Handbells. The congregation met the challenge with enthusiasm and the bells were purchased within a month's time. Meanwhile, Pastor Wolfe was transferred to another church, and the Rev. Steve Morton was assigned to Hope. He worked diligently with Mrs. Collogan to organize two choirs, The Genesis Ringers and The Bells of Hope, which would eventually participate in worship services on at least a monthly basis. The choirs were very fortunate to have her leadership as director for four years. The ministry is now in its ninth year. Currently there is one three octave handbell choir, The Bells of Hope, and two two octave chime choirs, one for elementary children in grades 3 to 5 and one for youth in grades 6 to 12. Rehearsals are held every Wednesday evening. The choirs participate frequently in worship services and other special services throughout the church year.
